Why is my wood wick smoking?

Don’t stress, this is easily fixed!

When a wood wick is too long, there is an imbalance of heat and fuel. The wood wick is unable to effectively draw the wax up to be burnt.

Extinguish your candle by s***fing, then trim the wick to remove all previously burnt wick before relighting. Check your space for any drafts and ensure to never leave a burning candle unattended

‘Triple Scented’ - that cheeky little marketing line!

It’s true, not all candles are made equal, but often with many high end productions you will notice they are labelled ‘Triple Scented’. What is being suggested here is that these particular candles smell good because they may have three times the fragrance, right? Unfortunately, wrong!

As chemistry would have it, there is only a limited percentage of fragrance you can add to any given candle wax. Add any more, and you would be wasting fragrance, which is one of the most expensive components of your production and possibly be compromising the quality and performance of your candle. So what are they really saying?

Generally speaking, fragrances all carry top, mid and base notes, for example, my Green Bamboo & Fig candle features top notes of lime and peppercorn, mids of coconut water and sea grass and base notes of vetiver, oak moss and cedar. That’s ten seperate fragrance notes!

Let’s just say I won’t be adding ‘Ten Times the Fragrance’ to the label any time soon 😉

What’s the best way to blow a candle out, you ask? You DON’T blow them out!

Let me explain.

Candles are best when they are s***fed out with a special cone shaped tool placed over the flame and the wick, extinguishing the flame. This avoids a few things like any wick debris falling into the wax, minimises smoke and prevents melted wax from going everywhere. Please do not use your lid to s***f the candle out as it is flammable and potentially could cause burns.
