🎓A randomized trial explored whether combining hands-on care with exercise made a difference for teens with ongoing back pain.

🩻Over 12 months, those receiving a combination of spinal manual therapy and exercise showed greater improvements in pain compared to exercise alone.

🔎The differences weren’t dramatic overnight — but they were consistent over time, which is often what matters most in persistent conditions.

BACK PAIN ON THE TOOLS?
Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints in physically demanding trades.
A 2018 systematic review in JAMA Network Open analysed 47 randomised trials (9,211 participants) investigating spinal manipulative therapy for chronic low back pain.

For tradesmen exposed to repetitive lifting, sustained bending, vibration, and load carriage, low back pain is not uncommon. This evidence supports spinal manipulation as one conservative, guideline-consistent option within a broader musculoskeletal management approach.

If your neck gets cranky at work, the first instinct is often: “I need a perfect desk set-up.”

Ergonomics matters—but a big systematic review of 27 randomised trials in office workers found the clearest support for something even simpler:

✅ Workplace exercise, especially neck/shoulder strengthening, was associated with reduced neck pain in people who already had symptoms.
✅ General fitness training also helped (usually a smaller effect than targeted strengthening).
✅ Showing up consistently mattered—higher participation was linked with larger improvements.

Meanwhile, ergonomic interventions in this review were backed by lower-quality and more mixed evidence, and research on preventing neck pain (before it starts) was limited.

Takeaway: For established workplace neck pain, the evidence in this review leaned more toward active strategies (strengthening/fitness) than information-only fixes.

Beware of sitting too long without getting up and having a regular stretch!

💡 Slouched sitting reduces spinal stress and lower nerve root compression compared to erect and slumped seated positions. Extended sitting duration may partially compress the lumbosacral nerve root, thereby potentially contributing to postural low back pain over time.
