When should I plan to have my baby?

A lot of women ask me when the best time is to plan for the birth of their baby. Everyone has different needs & expectations surrounding their birth but I generally recommend somewhere between the 39 to 41 week mark is the safest time to plan to give birth for those women who wish to plan.

It's important to me to have a discussion with mums about their plan & thoughts on timing of birth early on and throughout their pregnancy so they are aware of all of their options.

Should I be scared about having a caesarean?

This can be a very contentious issue and one many women and doctors feel very passionately about. I look after women who range from those who definitely do not want a caesarean, to those who definitely do & don't want to labour at all costs, and everyone in between.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both caesarean section & vaginal birth, and although I don't want to downplay a caesarean section as it's still a major operation, it is a very safe procedure for you and your baby.

Above all I believe your right to choose. I believe your choice of birth plan should be respected once arriving at an informed decision that best meets your & your babies needs.

Scans during pregnancy are very important for screening the health and wellbeing of your baby. Scans can confirm things like the estimated due date of the baby, whether the pregnancy is taking place in the uterus, determine the amount of amniotic fluid present, and whether the growth and development of your baby is on track.

The standard scans during pregnancy are:
- A dating scan, is best performed at around 8 weeks into the pregnancy to provide information on when the conception took place and when the expected arrival date of the baby might be, and confirm the pregnancy is progressing normally.

- A first trimester pregnancy screening scan is normally performed within the first 11 to 13 weeks of pregnancy. This test is performed to screen for specific chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome and normally takes place alongside other tests such as blood screening. The non invasive pre-natal test (NIPT) will also tell you the s*x if you want to know.

- A second trimester pregnancy screening scan is normally performed at 20 weeks and its major purpose is to screen for any anatomical abnormalities such as problems with the heart or internal organs. If the ge****ls can be easily seen the doctor might also be able to confirm the s*x of the baby at this stage.

As a private OB, I offer ongoing scans throughout your pregnancy to track the growth & health of your baby. These are not standard in public health, and even for some private providers, but are a way I help to safeguard and offer a higher level of care for my mums.

Many women are surprised to learn that they do not have another scan in the pregnancy after the 20 week scan.

I also provide a screen so that you can share in the scanning experience.

"What happens if I get COVID while I'm pregnant?"

This is a question a lot of mums ask. If you or your partner gets COVID during pregnancy, it's understandable that you may be nervous. But there is no evidence to suggest that you or your baby are at risk of harm if you get COVID. If you're in labour, we will treat you in just the same way, and otherwise the standard rules apply - get lots of rest and keep up your fluids.

Does continuity of care matter to you? Here's why it matters to me...

Sometimes pregnancies are completely uncomplicated, and sometimes you don't know right until the end how it's going to go. This model of care means you get to see the same person all throughout your pregnancy who knows you and that you can trust to know what you want and expect.

If you need help during birth, you want to know that the person looking after you knows what you want, and is someone you trust.

Providing continuity of care to my patients is something I value, and I have a higher than average birth attendance rate because of this.

What do you look for in your OB?

One of the things I really like to do for my patients is spend plenty of time with them. By the time you reach the stage of giving birth I've spent lots of time getting to know you, and getting to know what it is you want so that together, we can make the best care decisions at the pointy end of pregnancy.

Your first appointment will be about an hour, and all the follow up appointments after that are nearly 20 minutes with plenty of time for questions and to talk through any of your concerns. If you need extra time, that's not a problem either.

Every OB is different, but spending time with my patients is definitely something I value!

No one has complete control over how birth goes, but you should have complete control over your choices.

I believe women should have 100% birth choice. It is very important to me that all women are given the choice of how they approach their births. While we don't have complete control over every situation, so long as you are aware of the risks and have realistic expectations, the choice should be yours.

There is a whole spectrum of birth choices, from women who want to labour completely pain relief free that are hoping for an unassisted, vaginal birth, to women who don't want to labour at all and elect for a caesarean section - and everything in between. However you feel about birth, I believe your choice should be respected.

There are advantages and disadvantages to every choice, and during pregnancy we discuss those to make sure you are fully informed so we can arrive at a decision that best meets your needs.
