Living with Ankylosing Spondylitis teaches you very quickly that your body doesn’t respond to force.
It responds to consistency.
To listening.
To gentle movement, done often.
There was a time when I thought I had to push harder to feel better.
Now I know that small, regular movement is what actually changes how I feel in my body.

If pulling your shoulders back feels like hard work, it’s often because the front of your chest is doing too much of the holding.
From a somatic perspective, change doesn’t come from forcing posture or trying to “sit up straight.”
It comes from gently teaching tight muscles how to soften and let go.
As you try this movement, close your eyes if you can.
It helps your nervous system tune in more clearly to what’s happening, so your shoulders can return to a more natural, relaxed position — without effort.
Move slowly. Follow your breath.
And notice what changes.

For a long time, strength training felt like something my body was supposed to want…
but often, when I tried, it just didn’t feel good.
My knees would complain.
My back would tighten.
Everything felt braced instead of strong.
What changed things for me wasn’t giving up on strength —
it was learning how to prepare my body for it first.
A few minutes of gentle somatic movement before I load my body now makes a huge difference.
I feel more organised through my posture, more connected, and much more able to move well under load — without that “fight” in my body.

This is what somatic movement is designed to do.
Small, slow, mindful movement changes the quality of information your nervous system receives.
When movement is gentle and specific, your brain can sense differences from side to side — effort, ease, restriction, compensation.
That level of attention is what creates awareness.
And without it, we often keep working the area we think is the problem — while missing what’s actually driving the tension.

Living with Ankylosing Spondylitis means my body sometimes needs extra care — especially during a flare.
This past week, things felt tighter, heavier, and more inflamed than usual, so I slowed down and focused on the simple things that help me rebalance and feel more comfortable again.
Here’s what supported me:
1. Rest
I gave myself permission to take a full day off — no guilt. When my system is irritated, stopping early always helps more than pushing through.
2. Magnesium bath
A long soak softened the tension I was holding through my back, neck and legs, and helped everything settle.
3. Hydrate
Magnesium electrolytes made a noticeable difference in my energy and helped reduce that full-body tightness that comes with a flare.
4. Evening Somatics
Prioritising 15 minutes before bed helped calm my nervous system and improved how my body felt the next morning- reducing stiffness and pain.
5. Gentle movement only
I chose somatics and slow & soft yoga instead of higher intensity, higher cardio training….& trust that I’ll get back to my normal routine once the flare settles.
6. Whole foods
I kept meals simple and reduced sugar to support settling inflammation. Nothing extreme — just nourishing, light choices.
7. Massage support
A gentle, pain-free treatment helped my body soften even further.
