Oncology nurse Georgina completed her World's Greatest Shave yesterday, with the help of her some special friends at the Calvary Connery Centre.

Georgina wanted to be involved to show support for people with all types of cancer, and to raise funds for the Leukaemia foundation.

“It’s such a privilege to be able to care for those having treatment for cancer – the patients, staff and volunteers here are all like family to me. If I can do even a small thing like shaving my hair to show my support, then I am more than happy to do so!”

Patient Wendy joined in on the fun, undertaking the first few shaving strokes as other patients and co-workers cheered her on. The team even selected a playlist ‘Songs for a new hair cut’ to listen to as Georgina’s purple locks hit the floor, which only added to the good vibes.

Congratulations Georgina!

Did you know that Calvary has a dedicated team that supports and assists specialists and staff members who are interested in research?

This knowledgeable and experienced group provides guidance and support with research ethics and governance processes, study start-up and coordination; to ensure that research conducted at our sites and services meets regulatory and legal requirements.

Orthopaedic specialist A/Prof David Campbell has undertaken many studies throughout his career, and is currently a site co-ordinator of a new study looking at joint replacement infections.

“Infection is a risk for patients having joint replacement surgery, and we haven’t seen a big change in these rates over the last 20 years. The study that we are contributing to at Calvary is looking at several aspects – things like which antibiotics are best to use, and how long to use them for. Data contributions are coming in from all over the world, with thousands of participants involved. We are hoping the results will significantly improve outcomes for patients and have a profound impact on their lives in the future.”

Calvary encourages the take up of research opportunities, and several of our specialists are undertaking studies across our hospitals.

We continue to work on reducing waste, as we understand the importance of preserving our natural resources and combating climate change wherever we can. We’ve partnered with two reputable organisations that offer cost-neutral solutions for Calvary ICT waste while ensuring secure data destruction, and environmentally sound practices.

Today on we’d like to share a couple of our e-Waste Management initiatives that we have in place across our three SA hospitals and aged care facilities, with thanks to our regional ICT team.

Mobile device reuse and community support
We are sending functional mobile phones that are no longer in use to the Bedford Group, a well-established South Australian social enterprise supporting people with disability. Prior to dispatch, all devices undergo secure data erasure, and then they will be repurposed through Bedford’s partnership with Backpacks 4 SA Kids INC. providing essential communication tools to children in crisis care.

Comprehensive E-Waste Recycling
For other ICT hardware—including monitors, laptops, desktops, printers, servers, switches, and accessories, we work with through their SustainIT program. This initiative ensures environmentally responsible disposal and full data sanitisation.

These partnerships not only support our sustainability goals but also contribute positively to the community.
