Did you know the use of among young Australians aged 18-24 has doubled over the past 3 years?
Today is (31 May), a global campaign aimed to empower millions of to***co users to make a quit attempt. Over the last decade, we have seen a dramatic rise in the number of young people engaging in e-cigarette smoking with the to***co industry employing strategic marketing tactics to promote these products to children, including making products available in over 15,000 attractive flavours. Lung Foundation Australia recognises that Australian parents and school children are being bombarded with flavoured e-cigarettes and we are developing tools and resources with nib foundation to support parents and young Australians.
This , we ask the Australian Federal Government:
- Increase taxes on flavoured e-cigarettes and liquids
- Regulate and monitor online and social media marketing of e-cigarettes to people under the age of 18.
- Support empowerment and education for young people to be critically curious of the direct marketing towards them.
E-cigarettes pose known and unknown risks to human health and act as a gateway to traditional smoking, placing a new generation at heightened risk of lung disease and lung cancer.
