Movement is a critical component for the developing brain.

Every movement helps to develop brain/body connections which strengthen overtime. These connections are vital for things like reading, writing, learning, sensory integration, gross motor skills, memory amongst other things.

Physical movement also actively fuels the brain with oxygen and helps to stimulate various parts of the brain for improved functioning.

Here are some simple ideas to get your child to move more:

1. Engage in Animal walks within your routine. 🐶🐄🐘🐸

2. Swap walking or running to crawling from time to time.

3. Jump on a trampoline

4. Create obstacle courses within your home. 🤸‍♂️

5. Go swimming or shoot some hoops 🏊🏻‍♀️ 🏀

6. Play ball games, even throwing and catching. 🏉🎾⚽️

7. Pop bubbles 🫧

8. Play keepy uppy with a balloon. 🎈

9. Follow a simple yoga tutorial on YouTube (Cosmic Kids YT is my fave!) 🧘🏻‍♀️

You won’t catch me without animal walks in my therapy bag!

They are an absolute staple in my resource toolkit and here’s why ⬇️

1. It builds gross motor development in a fun and playful way whilst activating sensory systems.

2. It supports the stimulation of the cerebellum, which is the part of the brain that controls balance, coordination and much more.

3. It drives neural connections between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, helping it to grow and develop over time.

4. It provides a rich sensory experience through the different animal movements, particularly the tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular systems.

5. It’s one of the best ways to regulate your child’s emotions through active and imaginative play.

Need I say more ?! It’s just a perfect all rounder.

If you’re a lover of animal walks like I and my clients are, stay tuned I have something very exciting releasing soon 👀

Drawing is more than just an art activity - it can be a vital tool for supporting a child’s cognitive, emotional, and motor development ✏️

Through drawing, children refine their fine motor skills, express their emotions, build self-confidence and strengthen early learning foundations.

One of the best ways to encourage drawing is to start small and use motivating TV shows, songs, people ect to trace, colour and draw.

Movement is more than just moving the body - it helps build foundational building blocks from the inside out.

For example: You might see a child running, jumping, spinning, hopping ect and think not much of it, but really, what is going on internally and externally is actually incredible. What you don’t see is that those things are forming neural pathways, core strength is developing, and emotional regulation skills are being built.

This is the true power of movement!

Movement isn’t just about burning energy, it’s how children build the foundation for learning, regulation, attention and more!

Here’s why movement matters:
✅ It activates the brain for learning
✅ Builds body awareness and control
✅ Releases emotions and stress
✅ Improves focus and attention

✅ Builds core strength

Movement isn’t a break from learning- it IS learning!

Foundational skills are essential when it comes to every stage of development.

As an OT, I’m often supporting my clients with their fine motor skills so that they can engage and participate in everyday functional tasks.

But did you know that strong gross motor skills are an essential part of fine motor development ?!

This is why it’s important that when working on fine motor skills, you’re also strengthening your gross motor skills, primitive reflexes, and sensory processing too!
