This is what I call a "balanced diet". LOADS of veggies and a nice serve of salmon - to provide a balance of carbohydrates, fats and protein. You need everything in balance to create good health after all.

Simple, quick and delicious! What are you having for dinner tonight? πŸ˜‹

When I treat SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) I encourage my patients to cut right back on their consumption of sugar and simple carbohydrates. This helps starve out the bacteria that's proliferating in the small intestine and allows the healing to begin! It's a very important part of the process and it's something I go through patients with very carefully during the Module 1 of the Happy Belly Method.

People are often surprised at how much sugar is hidden in common pantry staples. Some brands of mayonnaise are up to 30% sugar! And I see the same issue with many off the shelf products like tomato sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, teriyaki sauce and many dips on the market. I suggest you have a look at the label next time you pick up the bottle of one these products πŸ€“

It's tricky looking and ingredient labels all the time. When you're trying to follow a restrictive diet it just seems like such a constant task. So I thought I'd reduce your workload a little and share 4 of my favourite mayonnaise options. These products are all:

πŸ˜ƒ Low Sugar
πŸ˜ƒ Very little additives or preservatives
πŸ˜ƒ Dairy free
πŸ˜ƒ (and in the case of Good Fat Mayo & Grevity's Bone Broth Sauce) made from 100% olive oil.

I'd much much prefer my patients avoid seed oils like canola, vegetable, sunflower and safflower oil and opt for olive oil based mayonnaise. But the latter are very difficult to find, unless you've got time to stop past the local healthfood store. For that reason I've included Hellman and Melrose's mayonnaise products on this list, which ARE made with seed oils, but they are also very low in sugar and free of additives and preservatives, so I'm happy for them to be consumed in moderation. At the end of the day they are 100 times better than Coles' 97% Fat Free Mayonnaise which is 29% sugar πŸ€¦β€β™€

I'm actually still in shock about that... 😲

When I met Cristina there was only about 8 foods that she could eat.

She joined the Happy Belly Method and she was determined to get better.

We did a number of blood tests as well as microbiome testing and found the root cause of her problems. I'm going to do a video on this when I can, as there was quite a bit too it.

Within the first week of putting together her treatment plan she was able to go from tolerating 5 blueberries to having half a cup! I had told her how important it was to push the boundaries when it came to adding more foods to her diet and she was absolutely determined to get better.

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Cristina and when she came to the end of the program I was over thrilled for just how far she had come.

Thanks for putting your trust in me Cristina. It took some time to find your WHY, but gosh it was so worth it in the end. ❀️

If you want to heal your gut then getting bone broth into your diet a few times a week is one of THE BEST things you can do for yourself.

Bone broth is by far one of my favourite food as medicine recommendations for anyone suffering from gut issues. The only caveat I have, is be careful if you suffer from histamine intolerance. If this is the case, I recommend starting with small doses of homemade chicken stock, which is cooked for maximum of 30min.

So what's all the fuss about anyway?

Bone broth contains large amounts of gelatin. Gelatin is basically cooked collagen. It’s made when you heat collagen slowly for a long period of time. It also contains high levels of alkylglycerols, which helps boost the digestive immune system. One study showed it increased lymphocytes in the small intestine by 40%!

It is also rich in a range of nutrients including calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, vitamin A, K2, boron, boron, manganese, and selenium, as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Bone broth is therefore a great all-round supplement for both the digestive tract and the immune system. It is a great way to get nutrients into someone with a weak digestive system.

If you can incorporate one new habit into your life over the next couple of weeks to support your gut... then this is IT! I've attached my favourite brands to this post so you have no excuses. πŸ˜‰

I absolutely love taking each individual through my program as everyone gets so much out of the experience. Having things setup in a clear structure also helps people achieve so much more. As they know where they are now, and what's coming next, so they can keeping moving forward with their gut healing, one step and a time.

If you are showing any symptoms of low energy, constipation, hair loss, sensitivity to the cold, low mood, weight gain, dry skin or a puffy face... then you need to a full thyroid panel.

But if your GP requests a full thyroid panel for you, in most cases it won't get done. Annoying much?!

As I described in my video blog a few days ago medicare will first test TSH and unless it exceeds 5 (or is below 0.5) T4 and T3 won't be tested.

You will generally need to pay out of pocket to get a full thyroid panel done. And you can organise that through a Naturopath. I often refer patients for blood testing very regularly as despite the extra cost it saves the hassle of doing 2 doctors appointments (one for the referral and another to get your results) and the stress of not getting all the tests done you wanted.

WHY is it important to do a full panel?

Because in the early stages of Hashimotos TSH will often continue to look normal, whilst the levels of T4 and T3 (the actual thyroid hormones) are not normal at all. Doing a full panel can also pickup subclinical hypothyroidism, which isn't as big a concern medically, but it can certainly make you feel pretty rubbish!

And I don't want my patients to simply be disease free. I want you to be THRIVING!

If you have any questions or concerns about thyroid testing then please post them in the comments. I'd be happy to help. And if you want to understand more about the different types of testing I do in clinic then click the link in bio

It was such a pleasure working with Arabella. She came to me doing all the right things from a dietary perspective but was still suffered from eczema. She had suffered from it since she was a child and was now and adult with 3 kids but the damn thing didn't want to budge! πŸ™„

We were not only able to clear her eczema but she also noticed a shift in her mood, energy and concentration which were great bonuses! 😍

The key to resolving her issues was of course linked to resolving the health of her gut. πŸ˜‰

When I work with gut problems I always start by taking a thorough case history.

I then move to looking at recent blood test results, as these help me understand what's driving a patient's digestive issues, and enable me to help them get faster results.

The tests I do vary depending on the patient in front of me. However, there are some that are on regular rotation.

Flick through the slides to learn about the top 5 tests that I most commonly recommend to my patients who see me to address their digestive health.

Were there any surprises? Have you done these tests yourself? If it's been a while then it might be time for another check-up!

If you have gut issues and you're looking for quick results, then uncovering the WHY behind your symptoms is the key to success

And Microbiome Testing helps answer many questions for us:

1. It can explain what's driving your chronic constipation

2. It can help explain your persistent bloating

3. It can explain why you experience diarrhoea

4. It can also explain why you struggle to lose weight.

This list is by no means definitive but hopefully it provides a small snapshot into why I find the insights provided by Microba's Cobiome Test invaluable.

Because the faster we understand the WHY, the quicker we can help you achieve the results you are looking for when it comes to your gut health, and beyond.

Until 4th December I have the opportunity to offer my patients 30% off Microbiome testing with CoBiome. If you would like to take up this offer, then send me a DM.

Lets face it, Microbiome testing ain't cheap. So if you're going to invest your hard-earned $$ into testing then you want to make sure you're selecting the right test. Given the growing number of tests hitting the market it's hard to know which way to go.

Which digestive health markers do they test for?

What's their ability to detect parasites?

And how much information to they provide on the beneficial bacteria present within your gut?

Do they check for candida?

Do they provide guidance on the best treatment approaches?

In my latest blog, I compare 3 of the most popular microbiome tests used in Australia and the pros and cons of each, so that you can determine where your money is best spent when it comes to microbiome testing.

I then recommend my favourite testing option at the very end. Click the link in bio to find out my verdict.

It was so great being able to work with Yvette and I'm so incredibly proud of how much her gut health improved during our time working together.

She's been able to bring so much food back into her diet again, which is just ace to see.
