We provide a holistic solution that enables clients to get what they want out of physiotherapy, perhaps getting back to sport, back to work, back to living, or just doing what they loved but were unable to do. By utilising the benefits of a broader range of clinical methods including clinical Pilates, massage and dry needling, and more all under the expert guidance of a physiotherapist, Back In Motion has been able to give its clients not only a great experience, but also the outcome they wanted.

Today, we honour the Anzacs who served our country with unwavering dedication and bravery. Their legacy of mateship, courage, and sacrifice will forever be etched in our nation's history.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

Our senior Physiotherapist, Tom, recently completed training in the GLA:D Back program, a treatment option for people with long-term or recurrent low back pain. The program combines both education and exercise to improve spinal function, reduce pain, and boost movement confidence. The program's purpose is to provide patients with the knowledge and tools to help them reduce their back pain and to better manage the pain that is present.

The foundation of this program is several key principles of managing and understanding low back pain. The foundation of this program is several key principles of managing and understanding low back pain. This week is key principle number 6: Natural movements reduce pain.

🔹Many people with back pain move rigidly, gently and slowly
🔹When your back hurts it is instinctive to protect it
🔹Although this might seem helpful, the back needs to move as freely and naturally as possible. Doing so can reduce pain.
🔹It is important to know that aches and flare-ups of pain are OK in the context of performing physical activities or exercise.
🔹Do not avoid everything that hurts, but seek a balance between:
➡ what you like to do
➡ the pain you experience whilst doing this
🔹If the joy of the activity exceeds the pain, then there is good reason to continue, but perhaps to a slightly lesser extent or in smaller chunks.

Our senior Physio, Tom, recently completed training in the GLA:D Back program, designed for people with long-term or recurrent low back pain. The program combines education & exercise to improve spinal function, reduce pain & build confidence in movement. Its goal is to equip patients with the knowledge & tools to better manage their pain.

The foundation of this program is several key principles of managing & understanding low back pain. Key principle number 5 is the brain can turn pain up or down. Pain is influenced by two main factors: signals from the body & how the brain interprets those signals.

Turning pain UP
🔹The brain can release substances that can worsen the pain experience.
🔹For example, if you feel anxious, scared or depressed, the body creates chemical substances, such as the stress hormone adrenaline, which can expose the brain to more pain signals and at the same time inhibit the body from forming substances for pain relief.
🔹The brain can amplify pain information about a possible threat, sometimes when it is not needed. The signals from the back that the brain used to downplay are now interpreted as danger signals. You experience increased physical pain.

Turning pain DOWN:
🔹The brain can produce chemicals that are as pain-relieving as morphine (e.g. dopamine, serotonin & oxytocin).
🔹These chemicals act as pain-relievers when they are released into the bloodstream.
🔹In emergencies, the brain can reduce pain if it considers that something else is more important. E.g. in 2003 Bethany Hamilton was surfing & lost an arm due to a shark attack. She said later that she felt no pain. Why? The brain can reduce pain if it considers that something else is more important, like swimming to shore for survival!
🔹Your thoughts, feelings, experiences, beliefs, expectations & your mood play a central role in what chemicals are released by your brain & thus influencing the pain experience.

Most calf injuries occur when we go to push-off and accelerate but we often don't train this mechanic.

Here are a couple of options to work on this common injury mechanism! If you'd like to know more or to book in an initial assessment, please contact us on 📱9439 6776.

The foundation of this program is several key principles of managing & understanding low back pain. This week is key principle number 4: Pain is an alarm, not a sign of harm.

🔹Pain is often viewed as a negative thing, but it is a vital function of our body!
🔹Pain is a natural reaction, just like thirst: thirst = signal to drink to avoid dehydration; pain = signal to act to avoid injury
🔹Pain allows us to avoid, prevent and respond to (possible) damage to the body. Pain is the body's way of making us aware of something – a kind of alarm system.
🔹Signals from our back, together with the brain's interpretation of these signals, can activate the pain alarm system. However, the strength of the alarm doesn't always match what is happening in the back. In prolonged or recurrent back pain, the degree of pain is often poorly related to what is happening in the back.
🔹The brain has a strong memory for pain. As your injury heals, a hypersensitive pain alarm can make the pain continue when protecting the area isn't needed or helpful. The pain alarm can be stuck in a loop which makes you feel pain even when there is little or no injury or damage.

With the sports season well underway, strong ankle support can make a huge difference.

Our Senior physio, Sean, shows you how to tape your ankle properly at home so you can move with confidence during your match.
