Traditional Chinese Medicine...what does that actually mean for someone with endometriosis?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete system of healthcare developed over thousands of years. It looks at the body as a whole, not just isolated symptoms and seeks to identify patterns of imbalance that contribute to disease.

In TCM, many presentations we associate with endometriosis such as painful periods, pelvic congestion, clotting, fatigue, hormonal irregularity are understood through the lens of Blood stagnation, Qi deficiency, and Cold or Heat patterns in the body.

What might a TCM approach involve?

🔹 Acupuncture — to support circulation, reduce pain, and regulate the nervous system
🔹 Chinese Herbal Medicine — personalised formulas to address underlying patterns
🔹 Dietary and lifestyle guidance based on your individual constitution
🔹 Cycle tracking and menstrual health monitoring

TCM doesn't replace your medical team. It works alongside them.

Endometriosis and fertility...

One of the most feared aspects of an endometriosis diagnosis is the impact on fertility. And while the statistics can feel daunting, there's important nuance that often gets lost.

The facts:
🔸 Around 30–50% of women with endometriosis experience fertility challenges
🔸 But that means 50–70% conceive naturally or with minimal assistance
🔸 Endometriosis does not automatically mean infertility
🔸 Early diagnosis and management can protect fertility over time

In my practice, I work with many women navigating the intersection of endometriosis and fertility. Whether you're in the early stages of trying to conceive, preparing for IVF, or simply wanting to understand your body better — Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history of supporting women's reproductive health as part of an integrative care approach.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine may support menstrual regulation, hormonal balance, and overall wellbeing during what can be an incredibly stressful journey.

You don't have to figure this out alone.

Ever wonder what a day at Emerald Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine looks like?

People come through our doors with such a wide range of health concerns and that variety is one of the things I genuinely love about this work. Here's a snapshot of the kinds of presentations I commonly see:

Menstrual irregularities · Painful periods · PCOS · Endometriosis · Adenomyosis · Perimenopause · Menopausal symptoms · Fertility support · IVF support

Back pain · Neck & shoulder tension · Headaches & migraines · Knee pain · Hip pain · Sciatica · Sports injuries · Arthritis

Bloating · IBS · Reflux · Nausea · Constipation

Anxiety · Stress · Insomnia · Fatigue · Burnout

Psoriasis · Bell's palsy · Sinusitis · Hay fever

No two patients are the same, and that's exactly why I love what I do. Every consultation is a chance to look at the whole picture — not just the symptom.

I'm here to support the health of our community — whatever brings you in.

⏱️ 7–10 years.

That's how long Australian women wait, on average, to receive an endometriosis diagnosis.

Read that again. Nearly a decade of pain, confusion, and often being told it's normal.

Why does it take so long?

🔹 Symptoms are often normalised ('just bad periods')
🔹 There's no simple blood test — diagnosis historically required surgery
🔹 Awareness among GPs has historically been low
🔹 Women are often not believed when they describe their pain
🔹 In regional areas like ours, access to gynaecologists is limited

Here in rural and regional Queensland, the barriers are even greater. Distance to specialists, long waitlists, and a shortage of women's health services mean our community waits longer than most.

Things are changing — slowly. But awareness is step one.

If you've been waiting for answers, your experience is valid. Keep advocating for yourself. And if you need support while you wait, reach out — there are options available to you right here in Emerald.

Acupuncture & Chinese medicine in Emerald, Qld — it might not be what you expect

One of the most common things I hear from people who've never tried acupuncture is: "I'm worried it will hurt."

It's a completely understandable concern — and one I love addressing.

Acupuncture is highly adaptable to your comfort level.

Every patient is different.

Some people are completely at ease from their very first treatment.

Others — whether due to needle sensitivity, anxiety, or simply personal preference — need a gentler approach. And that's absolutely fine.

In my practice, I tailor every treatment to you. That might mean:

🔹 Finer needles
🔹 Shallower insertion
🔹 Fewer needles overall
🔹 A slower, more grounded pace to the session
🔹 Gradually building your comfort over multiple visits

There's no one-size-fits-all approach here. Your experience, your comfort, and your goals guide every treatment.

As an AHPRA-registered acupuncturist in the Central Highlands, I'm here to make acupuncture & Chinese medicine genuinely accessible — wherever you're starting from.

❓ 'Is this just normal period pain?'

Endometriosis symptoms are wide-ranging and often dismissed. Here's what to watch for:

🔸 Period pain so severe it stops you in your tracks
🔸 Pelvic pain that doesn't just come with your period
🔸 Pain during or after s*x
🔸 Painful bowel movements or bladder symptoms around your cycle
🔸 Heavy or irregular bleeding
🔸 Bloating (sometimes called 'endo belly')
🔸 Fatigue that feels disproportionate
🔸 Difficulty falling pregnant

The tricky part? Some women have severe endo with minimal symptoms. Others have debilitating symptoms with minimal visible disease.

Your pain is not a personality flaw. It's not weakness. And it deserves to be taken seriously.

If any of this sounds familiar — for you or someone you love — please keep reading this month. You're not alone.

Drop a 🙋 below if you've ever been told your pain was 'normal'.

March is Endometriosis Awareness month...

Did you know that up to 1 in 6 Queensland women are diagnosed with endometriosis? That's one of the highest rates in Australia — well above the national average.

That's your sister. Your colleague. The woman next to you at the school gate.

Yet the average wait for a diagnosis is still 7–10 years. Years of pain, dismissed symptoms, and wondering if it's all in your head.

It's not. And this month, we're talking about it.

Over the next four weeks, I'll be sharing:
🔸 What endometriosis really feels like
🔸 Why diagnosis takes so long — and what's changing
🔸 How Traditional Chinese Medicine supports women navigating endo

Follow along. Share this post. Someone in your life needs to see it.

So how does needling your ankle help your back?

Your body’s energy pathways — called meridians — connect your head to your toes. When pain blocks the flow in one spot, we can open it from the other end.

It’s like clearing a blocked hose by flushing it from the other side!

This method:
✅ Gives fast relief — often on the table
✅ Uses fewer needles
✅ Avoids aggravating sore areas

Next post — I’ll share real examples of how this works for headaches, back pain & more!
