Lauren from Thrive Speech Pathology sharing her knowledge with the staff from about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This communication modality is required for those clients that have difficulty using speech to communicate. These clients may use a device or a more low tech means to express themselves. AAC gives a voice to those who need a little extra help to be heard 💙

Did you know sleep-disordered breathing doesn’t just mean sleep apnea?

While sleep apnea affects around 1% of children, a more common—but often missed—condition is Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). In UARS, the airway isn’t fully blocked, but it’s just narrow enough to make the body work harder to breathe during sleep. This triggers frequent micro-arousals that keep kids from getting into deep, restorative sleep.

That sleep fragmentation has real consequences:
• Hyperactivity
• Impulsivity
• Trouble focusing
• Emotional dysregulation
• Daytime fatigue

That’s why early airway evaluation matters—and why is come cases orofacial myofunctional therapy can be a game-changer.

Contact The Breathe Institute for a full airway evaluation and learn how we can help.

We’ve made progress, but there’s more to do.

From March 2026, people under 25 with stuttering, speech sound disorders, or cleft lip ± palate will have Medicare-funded access to 8 assessments and 20 treatment sessions. This win follows SPA's advocacy and is supported by a federal Budget allocation of $74.9 million over four years and $29.1 million annually.

This will benefit up to 385,000 people, improving access to critical speech pathology services.

But our work isn’t done. With the federal election on 3 May, help us to push for:

🔹Expanded Medicare access for all with communication and swallowing needs via the allied health chronic disease management items (12 sessions minimum), and raising rebates to at least match inflation.

🔹 Speech pathologists in early childhood education and care centres in areas of highest socioeconomic need to support early intervention and reduce access barriers.

🔹 A stronger speech pathology workforce – recruitment and retention measures to ensure continued access to care.

Did you know that bedwetting (enuresis) in children can be linked to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)? Research shows that kids with OSA are more likely to experience bedwetting due to disrupted sleep patterns and increased arousal thresholds. Enlarged tonsils, adenoids, and airway obstruction contribute to both conditions, making it harder for the brain to respond to a full bladder during sleep.

When a child stops breathing during sleep, oxygen levels drop, and the body goes into “fight-or-flight” mode. This puts extra stress on the heart, which then releases a hormone (ANP) that tells the kidneys to get rid of more fluid—leading to increased nighttime urination.

If your child struggles with bedwetting and also snores or breathes through their mouth at night, it may be time to evaluate their airway health!
