What I learnt from my time with Dr Bessel van der Kolk 💕

A couple of weekends ago, I had the privilege of attending another training with Dr Bessel van der Kolk, one of the leading voices in trauma work, and the author of The Body Keeps the Score.

This is the second time I’ve attended one of his workshops, and each time I’m reminded of one fundamental truth 👇

Trauma is not just something we remember.
It’s something the body holds.

Not just in our thoughts, but in our physiology. In the way we brace, shut down, stay on guard, or struggle to feel safe.

Which means healing cannot live in words alone.
It has to include the body.

That’s why in my work, we don’t just talk about what’s happened (some times we don't talk about it at all). We gently come back into the body. We notice. We feel. We listen. Because what the body is often asking for is something different.

Safety.

At the end of a session yesterday, as I sat with a client, we slowed everything down. We grounded. We listened to what her body needed to feel safe before she left.

And I watched her shift. From contracted, to open.

Not through forcing or fixing, but through giving her body an experience it hadn’t had in a long time. As slow, safe, contained space to re-meet her body.

This is the power of supporting trauma through the body.

Not pushing it away, but allowing it to move, in a way that feels safe enough to BE IN your body, not separate or disconnected from it.

Sammy ♥️

If your child finds it hard to put their thoughts and feelings into words, this is for them. ✨️

Not all children express what’s going on inside by talking.

Many express through what they create.

Through colour.
Through play.
Through imagination.

Our Art Therapy Program is designed to give children a safe and supportive space to do exactly that.

A place where they can:

✨️ Express their thoughts and feelings through art.
✨️ Build confidence in who they are.
✨️ Strengthen social and emotional skills.
✨️ Connect with other children in a small, supportive group.

There’s no pressure.
No right or wrong.
Just space to explore, express, and grow.

✨ Starting 12 May
✨ 6-week program
✨ Tuesdays 4:00–5:00pm
✨ Limited spots available
✨️ $50 deposit then pay week to week

If you’ve been looking for a way to support your child’s confidence and emotional wellbeing, this is a gentle, meaningful place to begin.

Take a little tour with me behind the door of our dedicated art and play therapy space for children. ✨️

Children’s natural way of communicating isn’t always through words. It’s through play. Through their body. Through expression.

Before they can explain what they feel, they show us.

At The Still Space, I've created a space just for that.

A space where children don’t have to “get it right,”
they just get to be.

A space where their inner world can be seen, supported, and understood even when they don't have the words to express how they feel.

We can’t wait to welcome you and your child.

Our next Art Therapy Program begins 12 May.

With care,
Sammy ✨

Making mental health support accessible is deeply important to me, because I know the difference it makes to have someone there.

Not just for the big moments, but for the in-between ones too.

The moments where you want to ask a question, vent something that’s been sitting heavy, understand yourself a little more, or have practical tools to help you move through this season of life.

And to have that support from someone who isn’t family or friends, someone neutral, confidential, and trained, a space where you don’t have to filter or hold back.

I also know there can be a gap between where you are right now and taking that next step into regular therapy.

That space matters.

That’s why I created Therapist in Your Pocket.

A voice note support service where, for 30 days, you have access to me, a real therapist.

You can send a voice note in real time, and receive one back from me.

Not AI.
Not a chatbot.
A real human, offering real support.

You don’t have to have it all figured out to begin.
You can start now.

I’d be honoured to support you.

With care,
Sammy ✨️♥️

People often ask me how I do what I do as a Trauma and Grief Therapist. There’s an assumption that I must be able to handle emotions, that I’m somehow numb, or immune to heartbreak and trauma.

But the truth is, I’m human.

This week, I was supporting a client who has experienced unimaginable trauma. And I allowed myself to feel it.

On the drive home. In the shower.

I cried.

I cried because I’m human. Because I feel. Because I was with my client in their pain.

And I believe that’s what allows me to truly do this work. To sit with someone, human to human.

Not as a number. Not in a system.

But in a space where they are seen, felt, and held.

To feel alongside my clients is not a burden, it’s a privilege.

It’s one of the greatest honours of my life.

Last night, I went to The Phantom of the Opera on the harbour here in Sydney and I cried again.

Moved by the music.
By the story.
By the experience of feeling something so deeply.
Because to feel, is to be alive.

It’s a reminder that I am a living, breathing human being with the capacity to experience the full spectrum of emotion, beautiful, painful, and everything in between.

And that is what I bring into the room.

So much of life is uncertain. There are no guarantees. But what I can promise is this 👇

I will meet you in your humanity.
I will feel alongside you.
I will sit with you in what is real and painful.
You are never a number.
Never a problem to be fixed.
Never a diagnosis or a statistic.
You are you.
And it is my greatest privilege to be with you in that.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend.

With care,
Sammy ♥️

15/04/2026

I’ve still been sitting with this quote I wrote down, spoken by David Kessler at the International Childhood Trauma Conference last year. It's one that I come back to often.

The reason it has stayed with me is because it speaks to something that feels so often underacknowledged when it comes to trauma.

Trauma isn’t just what happens to us, but also what we lose through the experience of that trauma.

✨️ Our loss of safety in the world, in our body, and in our relationships.
✨️ Our loss of identity and self-trust.
✨️ Our loss of hope, clarity, and the future we once imagined.
✨️ Our loss of who we were before the trauma, and what we dreamt our life would be.

In order to truly support trauma, we must also allow space for a deep grieving process.

One that honours loss as a primary and deeply impactful part of the trauma experience.

Sammy ♥️

It’s here 🤍

Speak it out.
And be met by a real, trained therapist at the touch of a button.

Not AI.
Not a chatbot.
A real human, responding with care and guidance.

Or you simply don’t have the time for a full session.

It’s almost here ✨️👏

Tomorrow, something I’ve been creating and deeply believing in, is opening.

Because I see it all the time…

The moments in between, when something comes up and there’s nowhere to put it.

You don’t need a full session.
You don’t have the time.
Or you’re not quite ready to start therapy.

But you still need support.

✨ Someone to talk it out with
✨ Someone neutral, outside your world
✨ Someone trained who just gets it

So imagine this…

A space where you can press record, say what’s on your mind and receive a response from a real therapist.

Not AI.
Not a chatbot.
A real human, at the other end.
A therapist in your pocket.

Launching tomorrow 🤍

What is “a therapist in your pocket”? 🤔

It’s support, when life is actually happening.

Not days later.
Not next week.
Not when you finally find an hour.

But in the moment.

It’s simple 👇

You open your phone.
Press record.
Say what’s on your mind.

And on the other end?

A real, trained therapist listening.

I receive your voice note and respond with thoughtful, supportive reflections and guidance, so you’re not left holding it on your own.

No pressure.
No need to “have it all figured out”.
No commitment to ongoing therapy if you don’t feel ready yet.

Just a space to:

✨ Talk things out as they come up.
✨ Make sense of what you’re feeling.
✨ Feel heard, supported, and guided.

This isn’t AI.
This isn’t a chatbot.
This is real support, from a real human.
A therapist, in your pocket and available at the touch of a button. 🤍

Coming 13 April.

I'll be opening only 10 spots at an introductory fee.

I can't wait.

With care,
Sammy ✨️♥️

Imagine this for a moment… ✨️

You’re in the middle of your day. Something comes up.

Your thoughts start spiralling, and instead of holding it in, overthinking it, or trying to “just get through”...

You open your phone, press record, and speak it out loud.

To a real therapist.
Who listens.
Who understands.
Who responds with care, insight, and guidance.

Not AI.
Not a chatbot.
Not generic advice.
A real human. A real connection.

This is support that meets you in real life.

In the in-between moments, when things actually happen.

No waiting for an appointment.
No needing to find an hour in your day.
Just support, when you need it most.

✨ A therapist in your pocket.

Coming 13 April 💕

6 years of The Still Space ✨️

What started as a personal journey through my own grief, trauma and abuse, together with a deep pull to create something different, has become a space that has held so many stories, so much courage, and so many moments of change.

The Still Space was built from one of the most traumatic moments of my life. The unexpected loss of my dad.

In the midst of that grief, I found myself searching, for the people, the practices, and the spaces that could truly hold me.

Spaces where I wasn’t a number.
Not part of a system.
But a human being with a story that mattered.

Because this really spoke to my heart, I wanted to create the space I so longed for. And from that journey, The Still Space was born. 💕

So when I say this is more than a business to me, I really mean that.

It holds my why.
My lived experience.
And a deep passion to create support that feels human, grounded, and real.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of sitting with people in some of their hardest seasons.

Grief. Anxiety. Trauma. Life transitions. The moments that don’t always make sense.

And alongside that, I’ve noticed something, there are so many people who sit just outside of therapy.

Not in crisis.
Not ready to start.
Or simply needing support in the in-between moments of life.

The late-night thoughts.
The overthinking.
The “I just need to talk this out” moments.

And I’ve been asking myself, how do I support this space too?

Because I believe support should be accessible, wherever you are, and whatever season you’re in.

So 6 years in, this feels like a meaningful next step.

Something new is coming next week and I can't wait to share it with you.

With care,
Sammy ♥️

Oh, and BTW, a HUGE thank you to who captured these shots during my Bell's Palsy recovery. Thanks for your magic when my facial paralysis made things a little tricky. ✨️
