For people who are having a knee / hip replacement and are worried about rehabilitation after leaving the hospital...

Here are some options:
(most people don't know about 1️⃣ and 2️⃣)

1️⃣ Private hospital - Outpatient rehab

If the surgery was done through a private hospital,
rehabilitation at the private hospital is usually free.
(ie. covered by private health insurance for 20-30 sessions)

2️⃣ Public hospital - Outpatient rehab

Follow up rehabilitation is available through the public hospital’s outpatient department.
But waitlists are long & sessions may not be regular.

3️⃣ Local physiotherapy clinic

Most affordable out-of-pocket choice.
Costs will be $90-$150 per session.

4️⃣ Mobile physiotherapy session

Convenient & easier for person needing help.
Costs will be $190 - $300 per session.

PS. If someone is going with option 3️⃣ or 4️⃣,
they can get a discount of $58.30 per session if they see their GP for a "Medicare / EPC / CDM plan" (valid for up to 5 sessions).

How to overcome pain from injuries in 3 steps

1️⃣ See a GP

- get any medical treatments you need
(eg. medications or injections)

- get scans you may need
(eg. xray, blood tests, etc.)

2️⃣ Use short term pain relief:

- Medication & Injection therapies
(recommended by GP)

- Change how you move
(do this only if you need to)
eg. take more breaks during activities,
use uninjured body part more,
use different movement patterns etc.

- Use equipment or assistive devices
eg. crutches, walking sticks / frames

- Get help from others to
do activities you need to do
eg. groceries & cleaning

- Try out “quick fixes”
eg. massage, dry needling, cupping,
special oils, vitamins, etc.

(Don't over-rely on these)
If these DO NOT work for you,
don’t think you’re out of options.
Just move on to step 3.

3️⃣ Improve your body’s capacity:

- Learn about your condition
and things that affect it.

- Slowly get back to doing
your normal activities
(even if it’s uncomfortable)

- Spend time on self-care
- Exercise
- Eat healthy
- Sleep better
- Control your stress
- Drink and smoke less
- Maintain good relationships

- If recommended, get surgery.

For conditions that are not life-threatening,
surgeries are optional.

Surgeries don’t have a 100% success rate.
There are risks of complications during and after the surgery.

-

If pain is not going away and it’s starting to affect your everyday life,
figure out what step you’re up to in the list above and take action.

If you need help getting on track with your recovery,
feel free to reach out to our team at VUNO physio.

Had a solid weekend soaking up wisdom from the legendary

Love seeing him challenge the norms to move healthcare forward.
Proud to say he's someone who's sparked my excitement and passion for helping others.

3 biggest lessons from the weekend:

1️⃣ “We don’t treat painful shoulders, we treat people in pain”

What a person can do to recover from injury is not just based on their diagnosis (ie. what structure on their body is “broken”).
Recovery & rehabilitation programs are based people’s:
-      Goals
-      Fears
-      Expectations
-      Current capacity
-      Other factors specific to them

2️⃣ There is a lot of outdated and biased information in healthcare.

Don’t believe everything you see on the internet (including this post).
Don’t believe everything people tell you even if they seem credible.
Be critical and do your own fact checking.

3️⃣ You can't go wrong getting strong(er)

(So happy in this photo I forgot to open my eyes)

Believing that the only reason we experience pain is because of a damaged part of our body can be dangerous.

What happens when the body part becomes damaged and cannot be repaired?
Does that mean the person will be in pain forever?

If we see pain as something that is caused by many factors, we instead:
- find a path to recovery
- gain hope that things can get better
- feel reassured that pain is not permanent

There are things people can do to take control of pain.

Feel free to share if you think it'll help someone you know.
