Should I get Corticosteroid Injections for my pain?🧐

1️⃣Role of Corticosteroid Injections in MSK Practice🧑🏻‍⚕️
💉Primarily used as anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids can benefit non-inflammatory MSK conditions as well. However, they are short-lived and must be used with caution, especially in immunocompromised patients.
💉Common conditions treated include osteoarthritis, shoulder disorders, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

2️⃣Risks and Benefits⭕️❌
💉Corticosteroid injections provide short-term relief (2−10 weeks) but carry potential risks like cartilage damage with repeated use, especially for knee osteoarthritis. They can help initiate exercise by reducing pain but should not be overused.

3️⃣Clinical Guidelines📖
💉Guidelines suggest using corticosteroids as adjuncts, not standalone treatments.
Repeated injections, particularly for tendinopathies, are discouraged due to adverse effects.
💉International guidelines (e.g., NICE, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) highlight their role but stress the limited long-term benefits

Does my body weight affect my chances of getting a joint replacement❓🤨

🌟YES! IT DOES!🌟

🦵A study has demonstrated a positive association between percentage of body weight change from baseline and the risk of knee replacement and hip replacement (in hip that were persistently painful), regardless of baseline BMI.

🦵Every 1% weight loss was associated with a 2% reduction in the risk of knee replacement in people with or at risk of clinically significant knee osteoarthritis.

🦵Every 1% weight loss was associated with 3% reduction in the risk of hip replacement in people who had one or more persistently painful hip at baseline.

🧘🏻3 Simple Chair Yoga Poses to stretch out your back🧘🏻

1️⃣Seated cat cow
✅Sit comfortably with both feet firmly on the floor.
✅Inhale as you roll your shoulders down and back, bringing your shoulder bones towards each other and arching your spine.
✅Exhale and round your spine, dropping your chin to your chest and dropping your head forward.
✅Repeat five times as you inhale and exhale.

2️⃣Seated forward fold
✅Sit on the edge of your chair, and lengthen through your spine.
✅Gently breathe out as you fold forward from the hips, lowering your torso towards your thighs.
✅Take five deep breaths and inhale as you return to an upright position.

3️⃣Seated simple twist
✅Sit comfortably on your chair, with both feet firmly on the floor.
✅Lengthen your spine and raise your arms out to your sides while you breathe in.
✅As you breathe out, gently twist to the right with your upper body and lower your arms; your right hand will rest on the top of the chair back and help you to gently twist, your left hand will rest at your side.
✅Look over your right shoulder. Use your grip on the chair to help you stay in the twist but not to deepen it.
✅After five breaths, release and return to facing the front.
✅Repeat on your left side.

CAN EXERCISING HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER❓🤔

Good sleep quality and regular physical activity are fundamental to good health and wellbeing. However, the prevalence of sleep loss and lack of exercise is increasing, often traded off in modern life for social and work demands.🤕

❓SLEEP VS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY❓

Regular physical activity has been shown to be an effective, non-chemical approach to improving sleep and is recommended as a complementary approach to therapies for sleep problems.

There is evidence of the two-way relationship, that exercise or being physically active can help you sleep better and getting adequate sleep can promote healthier physical activity levels during the day.

❓WHAT TYPE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY I SHOULD DO TO BENEFIT MY SLEEP❓

Participation in any regular physical activity is better than none!

Studies have shown that those who participate in recommended levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity (e.g. ‘walking briskly’ levels) are more likely to:

🔅sleep more than 6 hrs a night
🔅experience good to excellent sleep quality
🔅fall and stay asleep more easily
🔅not be diagnosed with sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnoea or restless legs syndrome.

⁉️
BOOST BRAIN HEALTH WITH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY🏃🏻🧠🌟

Physical activity is just as good for your brain as it is for the rest of your body.🙌🏻

Being active improves brain function and prevents cognitive decline. It has also been shown to make you happier and feel more pleasure – so your brain will love you for it!

🧠FEED YOUR BRAIN🧠

Getting a moderate amount of aerobic physical activity in your day improves blood flow to the brain, which is how your brain is supplied with nutrients and oxygen.

🧠INCREASE ATTENTION AND LEARNING🧠

Your brain is like a super-computer, and physical activity helps the computer function better. Research has shown that students who participated in short exercise breaks during a lecture increased their ability to focus, improved their comprehension and ability to remember what they had learned. So doing a bit of moderate exercise may give you that little lift you need if you are having trouble concentrating. Just 5 minutes may be enough to improve your attention.

🧠PREVENT COGNITIVE DECLINE🧠

There is growing evidence that exercise may help reduce cognitive decline as we get older and protect us from dementia.

The brain, like the rest of our body, changes as we get older. The hippocampus— that’s the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning—shrinks as we get older. This may lead to memory problems and a higher risk of developing dementia. The good news is studies are showing that aerobic exercise (the kind that gets you breathing heavily) can boost the size of your hippocampus.

🧠GET A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP🧠

Exercise has been shown to improve sleep, and sleep is crucial for brain function. We usually think about how sleep rests our body, but it also allows our brains to complete important functions, like maintaining the neurons in our brain, and removing waste byproducts that build up in our brains. Getting regular moderate physical activity can help to improve sleep, and a good night’s sleep will also give you more energy to be active again the next day!

THE BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR ARTHRITIS😲‼️

Living with arthritis can be challenging, but regular physical activity can be a powerful ally in managing its symptoms and improving your quality of life.

🌟ALLEVIATING PAIN AND STIFFNESS🌟

💡Arthritis often brings along the unwelcome companions of pain and stiffness. However, engaging in regular physical activity can work wonders in alleviating these symptoms.
💡Physical activity helps lubricate the joints, strengthen the surrounding muscles and improve flexibility. This can lead to improved joint function and a reduction in pain and stiffness.

🌟IMPROVING MOBILITY AND JOINT FUNCTION🌟

💡Targeted exercises can enhance the range of motion in your joints, while strengthening the muscles around the affected joints provides added support, stability, and protection. Over time, this can help make it easier to perform daily activities with greater ease.

🌟ENHANCING OVERALL FUNCTION🌟

💡Regular physical activity can significantly enhance your overall function and well-being too.
💡Exercise boosts cardiovascular health, increases energy levels, and can help improve your mood.
💡It also helps manage weight, which can reduce stress on the joints and lead to an improvement in arthritis symptoms.
