Recently I was gifted the spiritual memoir of Michael Singer called "The Surrender Experiment." The book details how Singer decided to stop resisting life's events and instead say "yes" to whatever was presented to him, regardless of his personal likes or dislikes. He describes surrender not as passive resignation, but as an active, "willing" partnership with reality.
Yesterday I met a lovely lady and her dog as we walked the beach. We struck up a flowing conversation which included the desire to bring more playfulness in to our lives. Ends up her middle name was Lila. In sanskrit lila is a profound concept, often translated as "divine play", describing the cosmos and all reality as a spontaneous, joyous creation of the Divine. Lila represents actions taken out of sheer joy and freedom, rather than out of obligation, need, or desire.
Today's encounter was a short tubby dog, who snapped at dear Shantiboy. Her name was Maya, which in sanskrit fundamentally means "illusion," "magic," or "unreality".
Maya (illusion/material world) and Lila (divine play/spontaneous creation) are fundamental, interrelated concepts in Hindu philosophy that explain the nature of reality and existence. Maya represents the magical, often deceptive, power that veils the ultimate reality (Brahman), while Lila signifies the joyful, cosmic, and spontaneous play of God in creating the universe. Together, they represent the "how" (Maya) and "why" (Lila) of creation. In essence, these concepts help explain that the world is both a captivating illusion (Maya) and a profound, spontaneous game (Lila).
Lessons are all around us.
