In “The Science of Trust” Dr. John Gottman found that unprocessed negative events between partners have an enormously destructive power. According to Dr. John Gottman:

“If a couple’s negative events are not fully processed (by attunement to each other), then they are remembered and rehearsed repeatedly, turned over and over in each person’s mind. Trust begins to erode… eventually, one is staying in a relationship, but that relationship is a veritable fountain of negativity (and that) cognitive dissonance is like a stone in one’s shoe.”

Through an ongoing erosion of trust, a couple can gradually and ultimately destroy their most intimate relationships. This can lead to the Ziegarnik Effect, which in simple terms, is the propensity of human beings to remember uncompleted or interrupted tasks better than completed tasks.

For example, you and your partner love to make creative meals together but disagree on how to load the dishwasher. Over time, you begin to feel so flooded by the disagreement, you both stop communicating and avoid discussing the issue. Now, loading the dishwasher is more about not feeling understood than getting the dishes clean. Cooking together doesn't feel the same as it once did. Every time you see your kitchen, you're reminded of this past conflict, not of the lovely moments you've spent together.

If you find yourself here, Drs. John and Julie Gottman offer hope for a way out with the new Gottman Relationship Coach conflict programs: https://bit.ly/3ci5PUO

We currently have a social work student at my NGO role and it's made me think of recommended books for practitioners not about models or frameworks but about Self. Currently off the top of my head:

- Trauma Stewardship by Laura van Denoot Lipsky and Connie Burk
- Burnout by Emily and Amelia Nagoski
- The Power of Vulnerability by Brene Brown
- Social Work for Lazy Radicals by Jane Fenton
