IS COMPLETE REST FROM TRAINING/PLAYING APPROPRIATE? 🤔

When I was 15, I injured my hip. I was told by a physio and a sports Doc to take 12 weeks off training, playing and exercise completely. As a young athlete, this was torture!

When I was allowed back on the field, everyone was so surprised that my injury hadn't magically fixed itself and my hip was still sore. In my 12 weeks of rest, I did no rehab or any other sort of exercise or training. I ended up having 3 subsequent hip surgeries.

With what I know now, It is extremely rare that I tell someone to have complete rest after injury. There is always something they can be doing to help them achieve their goals. While they may not be able to play competitive sport or train as they normally would, they can be in the gym getting strong and maintaining their fitness and working towards getting back on the field.

If your physio or doctor tells you to take complete rest, make sure you ask why? Do not expect to return to play after prolonged periods of rest and the issue to be gone. If anything, it will likely be worse due to deconditioning.

Exercise and strength training are paramount for any athlete and should be treated as the number one solution for injury - unless there is some sort of serious pathology or fracture. If strength training and exercise rehab fails, then surgery, injections etc may be a viable option.

I could rant on this topic forever, but I'll spare you the reading 😂😂 Click the link in our bio to book an appointment! 📩📩

DO NOT AVOID MOVEMENT BECAUSE IT IS PAINFUL 💯💯

We now understand that pain is multifactorial! Pain is not solely a reflection of structural integrity. People can experience increased pain due to a variety of biopsychosocial factors, such as:

- Stress/Anxiety
- Lack of sleep
- Eating habits
- Drug and Alcohol consumption/ Smoker
- Other chronic diseases
- A persons belief about pain
- A persons belief about whether they will recover or not
- A persons belief about what will help them
- Relationships/Social support
And many many more!!!

Pain is not something to be afraid of and it is okay to work through small amounts of pain with exercise and exercise rehab.

We are still learning and understanding more about pain and the allostatic factors that can influence pain and a person's perception of pain.

If you are experiencing pain with exercise - check in with your physiotherapist or exercise physiologist so they can provide you with guidance on where to go from here 😇

Why is strength training important? 🤔

Strength training is such an under utilized tool! It is a crucial aspect for injury prevention and rehabilitation, but often neglected! Just because the initial pain from your injury has resolved, doesn't mean the underlying dysfunction has improved 🙅🏼‍♀️ This is often the reason for a reoccurring injury 💥

Have a read of the findings from this meta analysis study conducted by Lauersen et al 2018. 🤓📚

So in summary, strength training is important! Especially for athletes regardless of age and sport 😊

It's also important to remember that strength training is very individualized and will vary from person to person 🙏🏻

NB. Please consult an allied health professional before commencing injury rehabilitation and prevention. To book an appt click the link in our bio 😎
