As we head into autumn, it’s common to notice an increase in colds, flus and other illnesses with the weather cooling down.

Taking a holistic approach to supporting your health and wellbeing during this season focuses on helping to strengthen the body’s natural immune response so it might be able to respond more effectively to illness in both the short and long term.

Natural therapies often incorporate a range of different modalities and go beyond simply addressing symptoms.

Instead, they take into account the whole picture, including lifestyle factors, nutrition, sleep and mood to help support your overall well-being.

Spending long hours at a desk or on devices can often impact our posture, contributing to tension in the neck and shoulders, lower back pain, headaches and overall reduced mobility.

Here are three practical tips to help support better posture and improve daily functionality:

✔ Take regular movement breaks: Standing, stretching or walking for a few minutes every 30 to 60 minutes can help reduce muscle tension and improve circulation.

✔ Daily stretching: Gently stretching the chest, shoulders and hip flexors can help relieve pain and improve alignment.

✔ Check in with your body: Take a few moments throughout the day to consciously check in with your posture. Roll your shoulders back, lengthen your spine and ensure your head isn’t jutting forward.

If you’re experiencing ongoing discomfort, Myotherapy could help relieve discomfort and improve functionality by addressing the underlying muscular tension.

We recently sat down with our new Myotherapist, Wesley Norris, to learn more about his background and passion for sport, health and wellbeing.

Wesley has always loved and enjoyed playing sports. He has also experienced numerous injuries throughout his sporting career, many of which were not properly rehabilitated at the time.

These experiences were pivotal in shaping his approach and commitment to ensuring his patients receive the right rehabilitation and education to recover properly and reduce the risk of ongoing issues through Myotherapy.

Wesley defines Myotherapy as a focused approach that aims to address the underlying causes of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. It can be particularly helpful in providing relief for concerns such as chronic back pain, sporting injuries, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Wesley is available on Mondays and Thursdays.

We’re excited to welcome Wesley Norris, our new Myotherapist, who will be stepping in while Eden is away on maternity leave.

Wesley enjoys supporting clients with injury prevention and rehabilitation, stress relief and managing acute and chronic pain.

He holds an Advanced Diploma in Myotherapy, a Diploma in Remedial Massage and a Certificate IV in Massage Therapy, bringing a strong foundation of knowledge and hands-on experience to his practice.

Wesley has worked with the Western Bulldogs Football Team, where he gained valuable experience working with professional athletes to create strengthening regimes, recovery protocols, flexibility and mobility techniques and cupping.

Some modalities that Wesley often includes in his practice include dry needling, cupping, deep tissue massage, trigger point work, lymphatic drainage and mobilisation.

Wesley believes that “passion creates progress”, a philosophy that he actively brings into his work as a Myotherapist here at Essendon Natural Health.

Outside of the practice, Wesley enjoys going to the gym, watching AFL and playing tennis, a sport he has loved playing since he was a young boy.

Happy International Women’s Day from all of us here at Essendon Natural Health!

Women’s health is central to the philosophy and clinical focus of our practice because hormonal health influences nearly every stage of life from adolescence through to perimenopause and beyond.

Our practitioners are dedicated and recognise that when a woman’s cycle, fertility, stress levels, digestion, sleep and emotional wellbeing are supported, their overall health and quality of life improve significantly.

Many individuals also carry the physical and emotional load of family planning, pregnancy, postpartum recovery and caregiving, which makes comprehensive support especially important to us.

Women’s health and wellbeing are integral to our clinical focus here at Essendon Natural Health.

It is a complex and deeply fascinating field, and one that has always been a particular interest for our Clinical Director, Robert Gentile.

Providing comprehensive support is essential for women’s overall health and quality of life, ensuring they feel supported physically and emotionally.

Here’s what Robert has to say about why a holistic approach matters when it comes to women’s health:

“During my early training in Chinese Medicine, both at the student clinic and during my internship at Shanghai Shuguang Hospital, I developed a strong interest in women’s health. I saw how deeply reproductive and hormonal health can influence an individual's state of health, and how natural and conventional medicine can be successfully integrated for these complaints.

Women’s health is both complex and deeply fascinating, and I value being able to provide treatment that supports patients physically while also acknowledging the emotional aspects of their journey. I always say that the best approach considers the relationship between body and mind.

Over the years, my clinical focus in this area has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to support individuals through significant life stages — whether they are trying to conceive, managing hormonal imbalances, or navigating pregnancy and postpartum recovery. My focus has always been to create a safe, supportive space where patients feel heard, understood and empowered in their health decisions."

Growing pains are commonly experienced in young children, but for parents and caregivers, it can be difficult to see a child in discomfort, especially when there is no clear cause or injury.

Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to help restore balance within the body by releasing tension and improving joint mobility.

By targeting both the muscles and joints affected by growing pains, osteopathy could help ease discomfort and support your child in returning to normal activities.

During treatment sessions, an osteopath may use gentle massage techniques to relax tight muscles and improve circulation. Guidance on safe stretching exercises may also be provided to help manage pain at home.

All treatments are tailored to your child’s individual needs, with our experienced osteopaths working closely with parents and caregivers every step of the way to ensure a safe and supportive approach to care.

Growing pains are an intense feeling of discomfort that’s commonly experienced in children between the ages of 3 and 12 years.

Symptoms can often centre around the legs and arms.

While the exact cause of growing pains is still unknown, there might be links to tight muscles during growth spurts, excessive physical activity or poor posture.

For parents and caregivers, it can be difficult to see a child in discomfort, especially when there is no clear cause or injury. This is where holistic approaches, such as Osteopathy, could assist with relieving muscle tightness to help ease discomfort.

Say hello to our Osteopath here at ENH, Dr. Amy Ly 👋

Amy takes a holistic approach to care by considering lifestyle, emotional well-being and environmental factors alongside physical symptoms to develop a personalised treatment plan that supports each patient’s unique condition or injury.

So, what can you expect from an osteopathy session?

Each appointment begins with a thorough case history and detailed physical assessment to gain a comprehensive understanding of your body and presenting concern. From there, a diagnosis is formed, and an individualised treatment plan is developed.

Osteopathy may incorporate a range of hands-on techniques, including soft tissue therapy and massage, joint mobilisation, muscle energy technique, manipulation, stretching, and dry needling where appropriate. Advice and tailored exercises may also be provided to support a self-management program and long-term results.

Amy is available for appointments on Mondays, Wednesdays and every second Saturday.

Naturopathy is a holistic approach to health and wellbeing that involves a range of different modalities such as nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, flower essences and more.

A naturopathic approach to sleep begins by exploring the root causes of why sleep may be disrupted to help restore the body's natural sleep-wake cycles.

Common naturopathic approaches to improve sleep may include:

😴 Herbal medicine that could help to calm the nervous system, reduce restlessness and support more restorative sleep.

😴 Dietary changes or supplementation to address nutrient deficiencies that might be impacting the body’s ability to relax and regulate sleep cycles.

😴 Stress management techniques such as adaptogenic herbs, breathwork or mindfulness, aimed to help regulate cortisol and support adrenal function.

😴 Optimising sleep hygiene, which might help encourage more consistent and restorative sleep patterns.

Visit our blog to learn more about how naturopathy and other holistic approaches might help you identify and address the underlying factors contributing to disrupted sleep:
