March 13 is World Sleep Day so we wanted to highlight the importance of a good night’s sleep.

A critical factor in a good night’s sleep is your pillow.
Have you ever woken up after a night’s rest feeling stiff and sore?
This is usually caused by muscle and joint tension which can develop overnight if your neck is not optimally supported. This tension can disrupt your natural sleep routine and wake you early.

Also, If you’re not sleeping well:
❌There is an increased risk of chronic diseases, like heart disease & diabetes
❌ You may feel more stress, anxiety & depression 😟
❌ You may experience more muscle tension, joint pain & slower recovery from exercise/training.
❌ You may be sick more often

But how do you know which pillow is right for you?
Watch the video above as Graham explains how to find the right pillow.

If you would like a FREE Pillow Fitting, which is a 15min onsite service, please comment SLEEP below.

Today, March 8th, is International Women's Day, a day to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements and rights of women from all over the world.
We're fortunate at Northwest Physiotherapy Group to have a group of wonderful women on our team - Nicole, Marisa, Angela, Jenny, and Allison.
They are an amazing group of smart, creative, and hardworking women and play such an important role in our practice and the lives of all our families.
Their presence is valued not only by the team, but our clients, too!

The real reason we employed a new graduate.

Let’s be honest.
Many clinics hire new grads because they’re cheaper.
Stack the diary.
Short appointments.
High volume = more revenue.

We get it — running a practice is hard.

But when a new physio is thrown in the deep end without real mentoring?
Care becomes transactional.
Hands-on skill gets lost.
Outcomes suffer.

That’s not why we did it.

We employed a new graduate to invest in them — properly.

We believe hands-on skill must be passed down intentionally.
Not rushed.
Not diluted.
Not replaced with generic programs and 10min consults.

We specialise in a whole-body, systematic problem-solving approach to musculoskeletal conditions.
That level of reasoning isn’t learned in a weekend course.
It’s built through months and years of mentoring.

So we chose to:

✔️ Develop a structured in-house mentorship program
✔️ Pass on advanced hands-on skills
✔️ Teach thorough whole-body assessment and problem solving
✔️ Protect the integrity of hands-on physiotherapy

While many are shifting away from hands on care, we embrace it — because in the right hands, for the right person, it gets powerful results. Especially for people no one else has been able to help.

There are other benefits of employing a graduate:

• It keeps us sharp
• It improves us as teachers and clinicians
• It gives clients more choice
• It makes effective treatment more affordable and accessible

Most importantly?

It helps shape the next generation of physios to be skilled, thorough, open-minded and caring professionals.

Protecting the future of our profession means investing in it — not exploiting it.

And our clients deserve nothing less.

One of the most common things we hear in our rooms is:
“No one’s ever looked there before!”
And honestly? That surprises us.
If you’ve tried physio, chiro, massage, exercises… and you’re still in pain, this might be why.
That's why we want to share the 3 steps you can take to overcome this problem.

Step 1: Stop Only Looking Where It Hurts
Where your pain is may not be the best place you should focus.
For example, if you have shoulder pain, it might involve areas that are routinely missed, such as the subscapularis muscle and lumbar anterior disc joint (front of the spine).
Unhappy joints, tight muscles, and even nerve tension can drive pain somewhere completely different.
If no one assesses these… the real driver can stay hidden.

Step 2: Understand What Pain Actually Is
Pain is not always tissue damage. It is an output from your brain — a protective warning system.
That’s why scans often don’t match symptoms. “Wear and tear” shows up in pain-free people and treatments aimed only at the sore spot fail.
If practitioners rely purely on imaging or follow a recipe approach, pain often persists.

Step 3: Look at the Whole System
The body is connected.
When assessments are performed while being open-minded, curious, and whole-body focused... breakthroughs happen.
Because sometimes the answer isn’t obvious. Sometimes it’s in a place no one has ever checked before.

What Happens If You Don’t?
People stay stuck.... quality of life and mental health suffers.
Months turn into years of restriction, frustration, and fatigue. Pain takes its toll on work, hobbies, sport, and relationships. Persistent pain doesn’t just affect your body — it affects your life.

The Takeaway
If you’ve “failed” conservative treatment before…
You may not have failed. The assessment may have.
The best results come from doing things differently. From looking in obscure places.
From understanding pain properly.
From being genuinely invested in finding the real driver — not just managing symptoms.
Because getting you out of pain isn’t just about reducing symptoms. It’s about restoring your quality of life.
And that’s worth looking deeper for.

Still Struggling With Pain That Won’t Go Away?
If you have been dealing with long term muscle or joint issues, your body has likely developed protective responses. These are your brain’s way of saying
“I am not happy. I need help.”

The problem?
Most practitioners miss them. They often:
🔘 Show up far from where you feel the pain
🔘 Are subtle and easily overlooked
🔘 Do not show on scans

These protective responses build up over time, making you feel stiff, weak, and broken down. But here is the good news: You can find and fix them!

With the Ridgway Method, we help identify and treat these hidden issues using a scientific, whole-body approach. Thousands of people have experienced fast, long-term relief.
✅ Move freely again
✅ Regain strength and confidence
✅ Feel in control of your body

🔋 You wouldn’t let your phone battery get flat —so why do it to yourself?
Most of us are more tired, burned out, and inactive than ever. And when we don’t take care of ourselves, it’s not just us who feel the impact—it’s our loved ones too.
Ignoring aches, tightness, and exhaustion doesn’t make them disappear. It just builds up in the background until suddenly, we can’t ignore it anymore. By then, the problem is bigger, the pain is worse, and our energy levels are drained.
But what if we didn’t wait until we were running on empty?
Self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Just like you wouldn’t let your phone battery hit 0%, don’t let your body and mind get to that point either. Listen to the signals, move more, rest when you need to, and take care of yourself before burnout takes over.
Because the best version of you is the one that’s energised, healthy, and able to enjoy life with the people you love. 💙

Your scan is not your future.

Imaging is a valuable tool, but it is often misunderstood.
MRI and X ray findings are frequently treated as direct explanations for pain when the research shows a far more complex picture.

Many people with significant imaging findings are pain free.
Others with normal scans experience ongoing pain.

Pain is not simply a tissue issue.
It is a protective output influenced by movement, stress, sleep, beliefs, confidence, and prior experiences.

At Northwest Physiotherapy, we regularly support people who were told they were “too damaged” to return to meaningful movement and activity without any change in their imaging.

The difference is education, graded movement exposure, nervous system regulation, and rebuilding trust in the body.

A scan is information.
It is not a prediction of your future.

If you have been dealing with long term pain, your body is likely to have nerve tension. The problem? Most practitioners miss these 4 signs of nerve tension:

1. Nerves must glide freely for optimal function
2. Nerve tension is a protective response caused by the brain and may not show up on a scan
3. Nerve tension is commonly overlooked and treating it directly can unlock long-term relief
4. Nerve tension may show up far from where you feel the pain

When nerve tension is unaddressed, it can make you feel stiff, weak, and broken down. But here is the good news: You can find and fix it!

In our last post, we talked about intentional action vs New Year’s resolutions — and how mindset is everything when it comes to reaching your goals.

But let’s be real… along the way, negative thoughts will show up.

Stress, self-doubt and fear don’t just affect your mood — they can create tension and pain in the body too. That’s something we see all the time as physios. When mindset takes a hit, recovery often slows down.

So if you’re working on your health, career or relationships, here are 3 simple ways to stop negative thoughts in their tracks 👇

1️⃣ Uno Reverse it
Flip the thought.
“Life is expensive” → “Life is good and I have what I need.”

2️⃣ Be your own life coach
Ask better questions:
• What can I learn from this?
• How can this help me grow?
• What’s one step that I can take to move forward?

3️⃣ Use your “BUT”
Your brain deletes everything before it.
“I’m frustrated that this project is taking so long… but look how far I’ve come.”

These tools take practice — but awareness alone can make a huge difference. Try one next time negativity pops up and see what changes.

Thanks to mindset coach BEN ELLIOT_officiel for the insights 🙌
Here’s to a positive start to 2026 ✨

Happy New Year!
We hope 2026 brings you joy, happiness, fulfillment and great health!
But let's ditch the New Year’s Resolutions!!!
Let’s make 2026 a New Year of Intentional Actions!!

Every January, we hear: “New Year, New Me!” 🥱
But here’s the truth: Resolutions often fade because they’re just wishful words. 📝
Intentions, however, drive action. They focus your energy on results, not just wishes.

Want a “body that feels strong and mobile” this year? Be intentional:
1️⃣ A new body starts with a new mindset. Get really clear on the WHY. WHY is a stronger, more mobile body important to you? How will a healthier body change your life? Visualise how a new body will feel to you.

2️⃣ Set clear actions. Be specific…Eg: I will awake 30 min earlier each day to walk, or exercise at home. I will join a gym and commit to going 3 x weekly. Share them with a support person so that they can hold you accountable.

3️⃣ Build habits that serve your future self, not quick fixes. Small, consistent steps lead to real transformation. 1% better each day… or even each week! You’ll be a 52% better version of yourself this time next year!
Lacking motivation?
Neuroscience says motivation doesn't cause effort... effort causes motivation. The brain rewards action with dopamine that fuels more action.

🎯 Intentional action drives results. Start with purpose, take aligned action... just do it.. and watch your motivation increase, and the change happen.

👉 Ready to move with intention this year? Let us help you start strong.
