Today's wisdom from my teacher, Tsoknyi Rinpoche.

“The Dharma is a method to overcome the delusion in our own stream of being, in our own mind—a way to be totally free of the negative emotions that we harbor and cause to proliferate, and at the same time it is a way to realize the original wakefulness that is present in ourselves.”

~ Tsoknyi Rinpoche

Many practitioners believe they always need to "go deeper" with their meditation practice, but I've learned this isn't always true. The simple mindfulness practice you're doing right now might be exactly what you need.

Sometimes, adding complexity can actually detract from the beautiful simplicity you've been cultivating. Whether you're seeking Buddhist Liberation or simply trying to understand your stress better, remember that you're working with the same fundamental elements: your mind, body, and emotions.

Trust your journey and know that staying with a basic practice can be just as powerful as exploring advanced techniques.

“Most of us, at some point in our lives, have experienced some sort of emptiness. We’ve wondered "What am I doing here?” Here may be a job, a relationship, a home, a body with creaking joints, a mind with fading memories. If we look deeper, though, we can see that the void we may experience in our lives is actually a positive prospect.

Emptiness is a rough translation of the Sanskrit term shunyata and the Tibetan term tongpa-nyi. The basic meaning of the Sanskrit word shunya is “zero,” while the Tibetan word tongpa means “empty”—but not in the sense of a vacuum or a void, but rather in the sense that the basis of experience is beyond our ability to perceive with our senses and or to capture in a nice, tidy concept. Maybe a better understanding of the deep sense of the word may be “inconceivable” or “unnameable.”

So when Buddhists talk about emptiness as the basis of our being, we don’t mean that who or what we are is nothing, a zero, a point of view that can give way to a kind of cynicism. The actual teachings on emptiness imply an infinitely open space that allows for anything to appear, change, disappear, and reappear. The basic meaning of emptiness, in other words, is openness, or potential.”

“You don’t have to say anything. You don’t have to teach anything. You just have to be who you are: a bright flame shining in the darkness of despair, a shining example of a person able to cross bridges by opening your heart and mind.”

~ Tsoknyi Rinpoche

Sometime go outside and sit,
In the evening at sunset,
When there’s a slight breeze that touches your body,
And makes the leaves and the trees move gently.
You’re not trying to do anything, really.
You’re simply allowing yourself to be,
Very open from deep within,
Without holding onto anything whatsoever.
Don’t bring something back from the past, from a memory.
Don’t plan that something should happen.
Don’t hold onto anything in the present.
Nothing you perceive needs to be nailed down.
Simply let experience take place, very freely,
So that your empty, open heart
Is suffused with the tenderness of true compassion.

~ Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Excerpt from “Carefree Dignity”, translated by Erik Pema Kunsang
