We recommend drinking 2 - 3 glasses of lukewarm water first thing in the morning to stimulate digestion and activate circulation.

Our digestive fire, so-called Agni, is still weak in the morning. To support her we recommend warm water, if we were to drink cold water, we would extinguish the digestive fire completely and it would first have to reignite again. The water stimulates digestion and thus facilitates elimination, it also flushes out the residues of digestion that have formed overnight, the so-called Ama, from the body which helps the body to cleanse itself.

Warm water is not only recommended in the morning. Your drinks should be warm throughout the day at least at room temperature. Your Agni doesn't like a drink straight from the fridge. Water also needs to be digested. That is why Ayurveda recommends not drinking for at least half an hour before a meal so that the stomach and Agni can concentrate on the food. You should also not drink during a meal or, if it is a very dry meal, only drink in sips. Drinking before or with food is like pouring water on the grill before putting your meat on it.

Water contains all six tastes which we recognise in Ayurveda as sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. As we should set our day with sweetness, it is recommended to start the taste of the day on a sweet note.

We consider two different ways of oil pulling in Ayurveda. In Gandusa we use only oil while in Kavala we are adding powdered herbs as well.

In general, oil pulling helps to promote teeth and gum health, a strong jar as well as soothing the voice and enhancing the taste butts.

Indication (Charaka, Su. 5.78 ff.: Bhavamisra 1.7.5.26 ff)

> Dryness of the oral mucosa

> Gingivitis and toothache or diseases (prevention)

1 x daily hold 1 - 2 Tbsp Narayana Taila or Black Sesame Seed Oil for 10 - 15 minutes in your mouth

If there is any kind of inflammation of the oral mucosa, use pure ghee instead

Vagbhata explains four different kinds of treatments of the head with oil and adds that they are increasingly becoming stronger.

I. Shiroabhyanga

Therefore the mildest version is the application of the oil on the head, which is called Shiroabhyanga. Once we are starting to massage the scalp rhythmically, we call this Shiromardana.

Oral hygiene in Ayurveda describes morning routines in every detail.

One of my favourites after brushing my teeth is tongue scraping.

It is recommended that the scraper should not be sharp-edged, curved, and made of metals like gold, silver, copper, tin, and brass.

The classical texts describe that the dirt deposited at the root of the tongue obstructs expiration and gives rise to a foul smell; so the tongue should be scraped regularly.

Ayurveda

Well over 5000 years ago on the subcontinent India the parent of all forms of Healthcare was developed - Ayurveda (Ayur = life, Veda = sience or knowledge).

The World Health Organisation aknowledges Ayurveda as: "The world's most ancient, scientific, holistic and complete systems of healthcare.” which does not only teach us how to treat illness but also the importance of the mind-body connection.

‘Sama Dosha Sama Agnischa Sama Dhatu Mala Kriya Prasanna Aatma Indriya Manaha Swastha Iti Abhidheeyate” – Sushruta sutra sthana, 15/41

One is in perfect health when the three doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha), the digestive fire (digestion, assimilation and metabolism) all the body tissues & components (Dhatus) all the excretory functions (the physiological functions of urination and defecation) are in perfect order with a pleasantly disposed and contented mind, senses and spirit.
