From time to time, it’s important to return to the origins of the teachings we draw from anchoring ourselves in something clear, time-tested, and deeply considered.
We’re beginning a monthly exploration of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a foundational text that offers a practical framework for understanding the mind and cultivating steadiness. Our intention is to learn, teach, and share with the community, deepening the collective journey in yoga.
We begin with the first Yama: Ahimsa non-harming.
Often translated simply, Ahimsa invites a deeper application. It’s not only about avoiding physical harm, but also about how we speak, how we think, and how we respond especially in moments of stress. In practice, it becomes a simple filter:
Is this creating more tension or reducing it?
Is this supportive or depleting?
This can show up as:
• Pausing before reacting
• Softening harsh self-talk
• Choosing not to escalate
• Creating space where there was pressure
Over time, these small shifts reduce internal friction and support a more regulated nervous system. From here, meditation becomes more accessible not as something separate, but as a natural extension of how we live.
We’ll be exploring one principle each month grounded, relevant, and applicable. If you’d like to experience this work in practice, we integrate these teachings into our weekly meditation classes.
