I and many other Women grew up in a culture where we were taught to criticise, critique & punish our Selves relentlessly albeit unconsciously
Especially for the way we look,
How much we weighed & the size of our clothing.
You needed your bra to be bigger & your knickers to be smaller.
Both body parts should be round, firm & perky - even as we bare children and even as we age!
We went thru the low fat, no fat, skinny every-fkg-thing years.
Many of us STILL carrying the scars & beliefs that low calories and low fat is best,
Never stopping to question or consider the unconscious conditioning we have absorbed.
As I made & continue to make peace with my body, I became kinder to my Self & so others
As I learnt to have compassion for my wounded Self and her ingrained beliefs I had more compassion for others
As I learnt to let go of those self destructive body shaming beliefs
She began to let go…
Her voice became quieter
As her fear became smaller.
Her fear became smaller
As she began to feel SAFE
HELD
LOVED
SUPPORTED
She would never have allowed ‘us’ to eat ice cream
Nor butter
Nor full cream anything
Because her value depended on her size & shape.
This is a reminder to anyone who know this story too
Self care, health & wellbeing
Are never gruelling
Never punishing
Never excessive nor depriving in their practice
So make peace with those parts
Get busy doing the work
And eat the frickin ice cream
And enjoy the view.
Life is shorter
And goes faster
Than you think
