Exploring nature always seems to bring out a different kind of curiosity.

That’s why we love using outdoor spaces in our work. Nature gives kids room to explore without everything feeling too structured or rushed. It can help with confidence, regulation, sensory processing, and just feeling more comfortable in the moment.

A bit of dirt, a bit of fresh air, and a whole lot of learning happening quietly in the background.

A busy mind can make your whole body feel switched on.

Grounding is one way to come back a little. Nothing dramatic. Just small signals that tell your body, “Okay, we’re here.”

Try pressing your feet into the ground. Look around and name a few things you can see. Make your exhale a little slower than your inhale.

Simple stuff, but it can help when stress, anxiety, or overwhelm starts taking over.

Save this one for a day when your brain has too many tabs open.

A soft nose, a curious look, and suddenly everyone slows down a little.

Horses have a lovely way of making people feel noticed without making a big fuss. That’s a big part of equine therapy here, calm moments, gentle connection, and learning alongside animals who are very good at keeping things real.

Nature does a lot for us without making a big deal about it.

Here are 12 little ways it can help our nervous system settle:

1. Fresh air can make breathing feel a little easier.
2. Natural light helps support sleep and daily rhythm.
3. Green spaces can give the brain a break from constant stimulation.
4. Walking outside adds gentle movement without it feeling like a task.
5. Sounds like birds, wind, and leaves can be naturally calming.
6. Open space can help things feel less crowded in your mind.
7. Being around animals can bring a sense of steadiness and connection.
8. The smell of grass, rain, or trees can pull you back into the present.
9. Uneven ground, textures, and natural surfaces can support sensory awareness.
10. Time outdoors can help reduce that “stuck in your head” feeling.
11. Watching nature move at its own pace can make slowing down feel more normal.
12. A quiet moment outside can create enough space to notice how you’re actually feeling.

That’s a big part of why we work the way we do at Byron Bay Equine Therapy & Psychology. Nature is part of the space, part of the rhythm, and often part of what helps people feel a little more grounded.

A little full-body horse shake to reset the system. Honestly, they make it look pretty effective.

Horses do this after rolling, stretching, feeling a bit tense, or just because their body needs to let something out. It’s a good reminder that regulation isn’t always quiet and still. Sometimes it’s movement. A shake. A walk. A bit of fresh air.

That’s part of what we love about working out here. The horses, the land, the pace of the place, it all gives people more room to notice what their body might need.

Grounding is a beautiful practice that actually helps out a tonne. Usually, it’s the small stuff that brings you back into your body a bit. Feet in the grass. Cold water on your hands. A slower breath. A bit of quiet.

We use nature a lot in our work because it gives people something real to come back to when everything feels a bit loud.

What helps you settle when your brain is doing too much?

Play tells you a lot about a child.

What they repeat. What they avoid. What they get stuck on. What they come back to when they feel safe.

In child therapy, play gives kids a way to work through things without having to sit down and explain it all perfectly. Through play, they practise communication, confidence, problem-solving, regulation, and trust.

It might look simple from the outside, but there’s usually a lot happening underneath.

Kids are pretty good at showing us when something’s going on, just not always in the neatest way.

It might be the extra clinginess, the huge reaction to something tiny, the school refusal, the restless energy, or suddenly going quiet when they’d usually be loud.

That behaviour can be frustrating, especially when you’re trying to help. But a lot of the time, it’s their way of saying, “I’m having a hard time,” before they’ve got the words for it.

Our child therapy sessions help make sense of those moments and give kids space to feel safe, understood, and a little more in control.

Being outside changes things in a way that’s hard to describe until you feel it.

People tend to breathe a bit deeper without thinking about it. Shoulders drop. Conversations don’t feel as forced.

There’s a bit more space , physically and mentally which makes it easier to process things without feeling boxed in.

In psychology, we know natural environments can help regulate the nervous system, reduce stress, and improve focus. But in practice, it often just looks like someone settling into themselves a little more.

That’s why a lot of our sessions happen out here.

Most sessions here don’t look how people expect! You might be sitting outside, walking, or just taking things in quietly for a bit.

For a lot of people, that makes it easier to settle. There’s less pressure, and things tend to come up more naturally.

We work with children, adolescents, and adults across psychology, counselling, and occupational therapy, with a focus on creating a space that feels calm, supportive, and genuine.

If you’ve been looking for something that feels a bit more grounded than the usual setup, this might be a good fit.
