Cases of influenza are already on the rise across Australia, and the flu strains circulating in the community this year are different from last year.

In January and February of 2024 there have been more than 16,000 laboratory confirmed cases of influenza in Australia. That’s nearly double what was recorded (8,592) for the same period in 2023, and for the 5 years prior!

Shingles vaccine now available.

Ferny Hills Pharmacy now has the Shingrix vaccine in stock and ready to administer. This is the new and improved vaccine for shingles, a painful condition caused by the same virus as chickenpox.

Shingles can affect anyone who has had chickenpox, and the risk increases as you get older. Shingles can cause serious complications, such as nerve damage, vision loss and skin infections. That’s why it’s important to get vaccinated, even if you’ve had shingles before or received the old vaccine (Zostavax).

The Shingrix vaccine is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and its complications. It’s recommended for all adults over 50, and it’s free for anyone over 65. You need two doses, spaced two to six months apart.

PBS Safety Net thresholds.

Once you or your family spend a certain amount on PBS medicine you’ll reach the PBS Safety Net threshold.

The PBS Safety Net is calculated in a calendar year and resets at the beginning of each year, 1 January.

On 1 January 2024, the PBS Safety Net thresholds were updated to:
$277.20 for concession card holders
$1,647.90 for general patients.

Before you meet the threshold, each medicine will cost up to:
$7.70 for concession card holders
$31.60 for general patients.

Once you reach the threshold, you’ll need to apply for a PBS Safety Net card to get cheaper medicines.

Your medicine will then either:
be free for concession card holders
cost up to $7.70 for general patients.

Feel free to ask us for more information about the PBS Safety Net threshold, and how to reach it sooner as a family.
