Sana In Nature

Sana In Nature Nature mirrors us when we learn about ourselves. We harness the restorative powers of nature to enhance physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Welcome to our Nature-Based Therapy Group, which is run by occupational therapists for individuals with disabilities! Sana in Nature offers a unique experience that combines the healing power of nature with a therapeutic approach in a group setting. We believe in the profound connection between nature, health, and overall well-being, and we are committed to creating a safe space for all individuals. Evidence suggests that nature-based activities significantly improve physical, psychological, cognitive and social function. During our sessions, our primary focus is fostering connections among individuals from diverse backgrounds, empowering them to advocate for themselves. Guided by our occupational therapists, our activities range from nature walks to animal therapy, gardening, mindfulness exercises, and beyond. These experiences facilitate a reconnection with oneself, others, and the natural world, fostering a sense of harmony.

Something you may not know about me…
Before I became a support worker and started studying to become an occupational therapist at 30, I was an interior designer who was walking around like a lost soul, moving from city to city, and I was deep in a long, difficult season of personal transformation.

My struggle phase was messy, dark, and drawn out over many years. I often felt lost, but I kept searching for the tiniest spark to guide me forward.

That pain, that slow journey became my compost. And from it, I’ve bloomed into someone more aligned, compassionate, and purpose-driven than I ever imagined.

I share this because healing is not linear, and growth rarely looks graceful while it’s happening. But if you're in the mud, please keep going. The version of you that blooms from this will be beautiful beyond words. 🌱💛

Hey, I’m Mel! 👋 A nature lover, Occupational Therapy student, and I have a passion to spread disability awareness and change they way the world sees an obstacle.
Growing up in Bundjalung country (Fingal Head 🌊), I developed a deep connection to nature that has guided my journey. After nearly a decade in interior design, I transitioned into support work where I discovered my true calling: Occupational Therapy.

Now, in my third year of OT studies, I’m exploring how nature can enhance well-being and help people thrive. 🌱✨ My goal? To share the incredible benefits of nature therapy and help others reconnect with the outdoors for healing, growth, and joy.

Let’s explore the power of nature together! 🌿💛

Inclusion inspires innovation, and nature is the ultimate inclusive space 🌿 In OT, we use nature to support regulation, connection, and meaningful participation. Even when going outside is hard (like on rainy days here in the Northern Rivers), we can bring nature in — a bunch of flowers or a pot plant, a nature-based activity, or even the sound of rain. It's still therapy. 🌧️🌱

Nature is so simple, yet so beautiful.
Even when the quality isn’t perfect, the peace still shines through 🌅✨

My passion for nature began many years ago, but being an OT student has deepened that connection in a new and meaningful way. Learning about the Kawa Model—both in class and this year at the OTA Convention—was incredibly inspiring. Alongside many other passionate OTs and students, I had the opportunity to experience the Kawa Model firsthand with one of the best nature-based OTs out there, It was a powerful reminder of how nature plays a central role in my own healing journey and how it can support others in theirs.
