Promoting wellness in aged care

Wellness in aged care is crucial for maintaining and improving the overall quality of life for older adults. It encompasses physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being, and focuses on enabling individuals to live fulfilling and meaningful lives. By promoting wellness, aged care services can help residents maintain independence, manage chronic conditions, and reduce the risk of falls and other injuries.

Here's a more detailed look at why wellness is important in aged care

Understanding the new Aged Care Act: a helpful guide in plain English

Big changes are coming to the aged care system in Australia, and it’s all part of creating a system that puts older people first, and that is guided by their needs, their choices and their rights. Here’s a helpful guide in plain English to what changes you can expect and what they will mean for you:

This plain language fact sheet gives a summary of each chapter of the Aged Care Act 2024. The new Aged Care Act will start from 1 November 2025.

Upcoming projects for FRC!

As we move into the latter half of the year, we have some exciting projects in the works for FRC.

We have recently applied for a grant from the Department of Health to build six new rooms. These rooms will offer more space and the ability to connect rooms for couples if required. Over the next five years, Australia is expected to need 50% more rooms available for care. However, with the current lack of funding and uncertainty in the industry, there are not many new beds becoming available – so we are doing what we can to fill this gap.

As well, we are currently completing two new units for staff accommodation, which is crucial for recruiting and retaining key staff at FRC. Our bathroom renovation project is also moving ahead, with 16 new bathrooms being renovated to remove the need for any shared bathrooms. This project has been made possible with funding from the Department of Health. This funding has also been put to use in acquiring new beds for the safety and comfort of our residents, security door locks and much-needed equipment. We expect the construction works to be completed in August, and we can’t wait to make good use of all our new facilities!

Our staff members have some great life advice!

Recently we’ve been asking some of our staff members for their best life advice to publish in our newsletter, and everyone has been pleased to provide their own unique insight into life. Here is some of the advice given by our staff members over the past year – and why we think it’s a great idea https://www.finleyregionalcare.com.au/our-staff-members-have-some-great-life-advice/

To celebrate Aged Care Employee Day (held on 7th August), we hosted a breakfast for all our staff that everyone shared together and enjoyed. We also ran a raffle for a hamper that was kindly donated by Charles Sturt University. Congratulations to staff member Takeiti Sila, who was the lucky winner of the raffle!

Happy Aged Care Employee Day!

Today is Aged Care Employee Day, and on this very important and necessary day, we want to recognise all the dedicated aged care workers who support the millions of older Australians living in aged care.

There are over 360,000 aged care workers, nurses, allied health professionals, lifestyle coordinators, hospitality workers, cleaners, drivers, admin staff and volunteers Australia-wide who keep the aged care industry running effectively and millions of older Australians well cared for. This year’s theme is “Thanks for Caring”, and we’d like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to all our staff members for their unwavering dedication, hard work and care in an industry that’s not always easy. We’re incredibly grateful for their commitment to providing exceptional care to our residents day after day, and for making Finley Regional Care a wonderful place for our residents to call home.

So, a big thank you to each and every one of our caring staff members for your dedication, resilience and care, and for the positive impact you make on the lives of older Australians.

We also invite the Finley community to take a moment to say “thanks for caring” – because compassionate, kind and person-centred care is just not possible without them!

What we’ve been up to in July

As always, July has been a busy month!

We had a lovely bus outing (the bus heating was amazing) to the Big Strawberry for morning tea, which was enjoyed by all. The scones were steaming, though the coffee was a little cool, but no one seemed too worried though, and still enjoyed the day. Looking at all the old photos of the school that was built there was a highlight also. Peter H’s Finley history videos were a huge hit as always. Debbie, our matriarch of match picks, organised a footy tippers afternoon, where drinks and nibblies were had and of course we watched some highlights of the AFL. It was a lovely social event – thanks, Deb.

The FRC Kiribati staff donned traditional clothing and performed some wonderful traditional dances for the residents, that everyone enjoyed. Thank you so much to them.

We had entertainment from Ray McCartney and all the normal activities we run throughout the days, including games, quizzes, art and craft, hairdressers, birthday month party, pampering, cinema, book club, exercises, bingo, men’s shed, men’s group, a resident meeting and many more.

I said in the last newsletter that I’d let you know how much was raised for cancer from “the Biggest Morning Tea” we held recently; and the final amount was $182.25. I’m so proud of everyone who helped with this. The money has been sent off and hopefully will make life a little bit easier for those who need it. Thank you so very much to all involved.

Some exciting things are happening in August, so keep an eye out for more fun to come.

The aged care journey – how you might progress

When you think about aged care, you probably think about what has been traditionally known as aged care ‘homes’, where older people live in supported accommodation. While this type of care is certainly a big part of the aged care paradigm, there are other options available for older people needing help and support with their lives.

There are three main types of care and support for older people in Australia, and many people will usually progress through all three at same point on their journey towards old age. Discover what you aged care journey might look like here:
