3 TIPS for exercising and breastfeeding 🤱🏽⭐️🏃🏾‍♀️

Exercise is sooooo incredibly important for its physical and mental health benefits, especially during the postpartum period 💖🙌🏽

Swipe across to read our TOP 3 TIPS for what to consider when returning to exercise:

1. BREASTFEED/ EXPRESS PRIOR TO EXERCISING: Where possible, try to feed or express prior to exercise in order to reduce discomfort whilst exercising🤱🏽

2. WEAR A SUPPORTIVE BRA: This is a tricky one! It’s about finding the right bra that offers enough support for you but without compressing your breast tissue! 👙

3. KEEP UP YOUR FLUIDS: Remember to keep hydrated as your breast milk supply relies on you being well hydrated 🚰

When should you stick to LOW impact exercise options?

⭐️ Pregnant/ early postpartum period
⭐️ Prolapse symptoms with high impact exercise
⭐️ Urinary incontinence with high impact exercise
⭐️ Post gynaecological surgery

This DOESN’T necessarily mean you have to limit yourself to LOW impact exercises FOREVER! Modify your exercise regime to include LOW impact options for the interim until your pelvic floor function improves and then gradually add in HIGH impact exercises as able! 🙌🏽

Example of LOW impact exercise:

⭐️ Swimming
⭐️ Yoga
⭐️ Pilates (Floor & reformer)
⭐️ Elliptical trainer
⭐️ Cycling/ spin classes
⭐️ Rowing machine
⭐️ Boxing
⭐️ Strength training

*As always, it is important to consult a pelvic floor physio for tailored advice as even some of the above options may not be suitable for you‼️

This month is and for us at PFM, it’s a time to remind our mamas out there that whether you had an emergency or elective cesarean, you DID NOT FAIL and you too also BIRTHED your precious little one! 🥰

C-sections are not the “easy way out” and nor does it impact your bond with your baby 🙅🏽‍♀️ It’s time we shift our mentality and celebrate all births 🫶🏽

🥝🍎🥑 HIGH FIBRE FOODS 🥑🍎🥝

Constipation can contribute to pelvic floor issues such as increasing your risk of pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence ‼️

There are so many factors that can cause constipation and poor fibre intake is one of them!!

Ensuring adequate fibre intake can help you pass a bowel motion more comfortably 🫶🏽

Examples of high fibre foods:

🍎 Fruit - apples, berries, kiwi fruit, pears, prunes, avocado

🥦 Veggies - broccoli, leafy greens, sweet potato

🫘 Legumes - Grains and lentils

🥣 Whole grains - wholegrain/ wholemeal bread, oats, weet-bix, bran, brown rice

If however, you feel that your fibre and water intake is on point, then your issue may in fact be around pelvic floor dysfunction (I.e. poor coordination of pelvic floor muscles) 🤔

Did you know that Pelvic Floor Physios can help with improving your bowel function?!? We address factors such as your current bowel habits, your diet and fluid intake, and also ensure your pelvic floor function and coordination is correct 👌🏽

We work closely with dieticians and gastroenterologists to help optimise your bowel function 😍

End result = Satisfying, complete emptying of your bowels 🙌🏽🤩

DID YOU KNOW?!

Approximately 1 in 3 women have urinary incontinence (UI) and 1 in 10 women have faecal incontinence (FI) after childbirth! 😐

The good news is, pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is highly recommended during pregnancy and after birth for both prevention and treatment of incontinence 🙌🏽

Whether you’re trying to conceive, pregnant or postnatal, it is never too late to get on top of your pelvic floor exercises! 💁🏻‍♀️💓
