Celebrations were in full swing this morning, as the team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Kew celebrated a milestone 500 ROSA robotic knee surgeries completed by Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Hayden Morris 🥳

The Zimmer ‘ROSA’ – which stands for Robotic Surgical Assistant – is a specialised piece of machinery designed to work alongside a trained surgeon to tailor the placement of a knee implant specifically to the patient in question.

Collecting information before and during surgery, ROSA creates a more personalised approach to complex surgery, by first identifying and mapping each patient’s unique anatomy and then tailoring placement of the implant to suit - the overall aim being improved patient comfort, recovery and satisfaction.

With cake, candles, balloons and some of the amazing theatre team who have been involved in reaching the accomplishment on hand to celebrate, Mr Morris said “It really has been a team effort reaching this milestone and I’m looking forward to hitting 1,000 cases next.”

A big well done to Mr Morris and all of our surgical team at Kew who have played a part in reaching this milestone – and here’s to the next 500 ROSA surgeries! 👏👏

What advancements have been made to help optimise recovery following knee surgery?

With advances in technology, so too come improvements in recovery, says Professor Phong Tran, Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip, knee and shoulder surgery.

By effectively managing local anaesthetic levels targeted to the affected area and working closely with the patient and their physiotherapist as part of a specialised rehabilitation program, the need to rely on opioids, which may have side effects for some patients, can be reduced, while still managing to keep the knee or hip comfortable, he says.

It’s RUOK? Day, an important reminder for us all – today and everyday - to check in with those around us, to make sure we’re all doing ok.

Whether it’s a friend, family member, colleague or stranger, it takes just a minute and even better, involves just 4 simple steps:

1️⃣ Ask R U OK?
2️⃣Listen
3️⃣ Encourage Action
4️⃣ Check In

Today, each of our four Melbourne hospital sites came together to do just that. With giant yellow freckles (yum!) and keepsake bookmarks on offer, it was a lovely opportunity to check in on one another, offer support and even just have a chat with our fellow colleagues and peers. Sometimes that’s all it takes to help brighten a day, lighten a load or make a situation feel a little less worse. And who knows, it could even just change or help save a life one day too.

For more information or tips on how to ask RUOK? visit www.ruok.org.au

If you or someone else you know needs a little extra support, the following resources and channels are available to help:
💛 Lifeline – 13 11 44
💛 Su***de callback service: 1300 659 467
💛 This Way Up: Online Mental Health Treatment Programs | THIS WAY UP

Today and everyday let’s all check in on ourselves and each other by asking RUOK?
