Today, on World Hearing Day, it’s estimated that one in six Australians currently suffer from hearing loss, a figure which is expected to rise to one in four by 2050*

Impacting all aspects of life – from work to home, relationships and self-esteem – the impacts of hearing impairment can be incredibly isolating and difficult to navigate.

For cochlear implant recipients, this advanced technology represents a way to re-connect with their loved ones, the wider community and all of the activities they enjoy.

Here at St Vincent’s Private Hospital East Melbourne, we’re proud to play a small role in what recipients – such as David - often call a truly “life changing” surgery 💙

Today is World Cancer Day 💛

The Cancer Council advises that almost one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, the most common types being prostate, breast, melanoma, colorectal (bowel) and lung cancer*

With the disease so common in our community, we sat down with some of our Day Oncology Team including Nurse Practitioner Marisa, Nurse Unit Manager Anita and oncology nurses Lucy, Meabh and Karla to talk about how best to support those undertaking treatment for cancer, be it yourself or someone you love.

🪼 Always a site to behold, our Kids Team go above and beyond, donating their own time, effort, skills and props, to decorate the ward in a different theme every few months.

Designed to distract and delight our smallest patients and their families at what is often a daunting time, their latest theme “Under the Sea” is no exception, reeling in many a compliment, shriek of joy and big beaming smiles 🌊

A big thank-you to 7NEWS Melbourne for stopping by to share and celebrate the incredible work of our nursing teams.

With summer school holidays officially over for another year, our Kids team at East Melbourne are taking a moment to catch their breath after a bumper start to 2026 🧒 👶

With over 100 paediatric patients admitted in the first week back for the year alone, Nurse Unit Manager Carrie says that January is generally a busy time for the ward, with this year being no exception.

“With the busy Christmas period over, many parents take advantage of their child still being on school holidays to book in some of those smaller surgical procedures. With Mum or Dad often on leave over this period as well, it’s a great way to ensure your child can recuperate properly with the at-home support they need, just in time to head back to school to start the new year afresh. The bulk of the procedures we see at this time of the year for our paediatric patients are ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) related and include tonsils, adenoids and grommets.”

One of the largest paediatric units in Victoria, St Vincent’s Kids has been specialising in orthopaedics, urology, ENT, plastics and general surgery for children and adolescents for decades.

In amongst tending to their young patients, the team has also been busy transitioning their Christmas display to the latest “Under the Sea” theming, which has also been receiving rave reviews from their many young patients and their families alike 🧜 🦑 🐳
