Caroline always knew she wanted to work in healthcare.

“I grew up watching medical shows and had family members who were nurses, so they became my role models. It just felt like the right path.”

Now working with head and neck patients at St Vincent’s, Caroline sees the impact of long-term care up close.

“These patients are often here for quite a while, so we see the whole journey. Watching their progress and seeing how far they’ve come is incredibly rewarding.”

For Caroline, it’s also the people around her who make the job special.

“The staff are amazing. There’s real camaraderie here, and friendships that last long after people move on from the ward.”

It’s that sense of support and purpose that helps deliver better and fairer care. Always.

“My grandfather wasn’t someone to be dismissed or ignored. He earned his first university degree in his late 60s and hosted a community radio show in his 70s. He was our mentor and sounding board. That respect I had for him is the same respect I bring to every older patient I care for.” – Dr Richard Kane

For Dr Richard Kane, a geriatrician at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, caring for older people is deeply personal. His grandfather’s determination and wisdom shaped his belief that older people deserve care that honours their individuality and life experience.

That belief is now at the heart of his work. Richard is part of the Geriatrician in the Emergency Department (GED) program, a service rethinking how older people are cared for, both during and after their time in the Emergency Department. Instead of being admitted to hospital, many are now supported to recover at home through the GEM@Home and other community-based services, that bring hospital-level care to familiar surroundings.

“I saw a patient recently with delirium and dementia. Rather than admit him to an unfamiliar hospital ward, we treated his infection and adjusted his medications at home. His family had 24-hour support, and the GEM@Home team helped them plan for the future. He stayed independent, and they felt reassured.”

The results have been remarkable. In its first year, the GED service freed up nearly 1,000 hospital bed-days and improved satisfaction for both patients and staff.

“For about half the older patients we see, safe diversion from hospital is possible. It is better for them, hugely satisfying for staff, and more sustainable for the system.”

Looking ahead, Richard hopes to expand the service across more hours and weekends, reaching even more older people when they need it most.

On International Day of Older Persons, we celebrate the wisdom, resilience and individuality of older people in Australia and the dedicated healthcare heroes like Dr Kane who are reimagining care to ensure their voices, stories and choices are respected.

It’s World Heart Day. 🫀

A/Prof Clare Arnott from St Vincent’s Sydney joined Sunrise to share some of the lesser-known signs of a heart attack, like jaw pain, nausea or shortness of breath, and the risks of missing these, especially in women.

Clare reminds us that heart attack symptoms aren’t always what you’d expect. If something doesn't feel right, listen to your body and have a conversation with your GP.

This year, the AFL Grand Final and the Feast Day of St Vincent de Paul land on the same day. 🦁💙❤️💛

Earlier this week, we marked the event with a mark. A handball. And a few kicks that didn’t quite go through the middle.

Our people, patients and families gathered in front of the statue of St Vincent, hands outstretched in care, to share a moment of connection, show their colours, and have fun while acknowledging the legacy that continues to shape our better and fairer care. Always.

For Dawn, nursing is all about care with purpose. Working on a busy ward at St Vincent’s, Dawn is energised by both the variety of cases and the team around her.

“The patients are interesting, the cases are complex, and I get to learn something new every day. The Allied Health team we work with is so knowledgeable and supportive”.

It’s the culture that really stands out.

“Everyone is welcoming and genuinely wants to uplift each other. It’s a great working environment, and that’s so important in healthcare”.

It’s this positive, team-based culture that helps deliver better and fairer care. Always.

Earlier this week, we welcomed Dr Monique Ryan to St Vincent’s Melbourne’s Healthy Ageing Service.

Greeted by Louis, our much-loved volunteer service dog, Dr Ryan met with our team of psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and psychiatrists, as well as Maurine, who kindly shared her personal story of how the service has supported her.

It was a valuable opportunity to highlight the service and explore ways to ensure better and fairer approaches to healthy ageing. Always.

As a pharmacist working in a multidisciplinary team, Romana sees the impact of good collaboration every day.
“We support patients who are almost ready to go home but still need input, whether it’s physio, medication reviews or speech. Because we all work in the same space, it’s easy to follow up, make quick changes and get them to patients straight away.”
For Romana, that close teamwork leads to safer, more responsive care.
“You get to see things from other professionals’ perspectives. That helps us work together better, and ultimately, improve outcomes for our patients.”
Every day brings variety, new knowledge, and the sense that she’s providing better and fairer care. Always.

Same Emergency Department, 30 years apart.
In 1995, Assoc. Prof Andrew Dent welcomed the very first patient through the doors of the newly relocated St Vincent’s Emergency Department.
Today, that moment is reimagined with a new cast, honouring the decades of care that have followed.
Through that same doorway, thousands have been wheeled, walked, or rushed in, seeking help at their most vulnerable moments.
And every time, our people have been there. Nurses, doctors, ward clerks, radiographers, cleaners, security, pharmacists, social workers, cooks and many more.
In every shift, in every moment of crisis, they’ve shown up with skill and compassion.
Thirty years on, they carry forward a legacy of better, fairer care. Always.
