Following the release of our psilocybin assisted therapy trial results, ABC News highlights the experiences of patients and families who took part - and the potential of this therapy to transform end-of-life care.

Their experiences reflect the trial’s key finding - that psychedelic-assisted therapy may deliver relief from depression and anxiety, while also enhancing quality of life, connection, and spiritual wellbeing for people living with advanced, life-limiting illness. These results highlight the potential of this therapy to transform the way we approach psychological distress in palliative care.

The results of Australia’s first ever clinical trial of psychedelic-assisted therapy have confirmed the treatment led to rapid and sustained reductions in depression and anxiety for its participants, along with improved quality of life and increased spiritual wellbeing.

The trial, undertaken by St Vincent’s clinical psychologist, Dr Margaret Ross, and psychiatrist, Dr Justin Dwyer, is the first in the world to offer psilocybin-assisted therapy to patients with non-malignant, life-threatening conditions such as motor neurone disease and advanced heart disease, as well as cancer.

The results are now published in the General Hospital Psychiatry journal, contributing to the growing body of evidence around the benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy.

“For people facing advanced illness with few treatment options for their psychological distress, this approach offers something potentially life-changing,” Dr Ross said.

“Our study indicated that psilocybin-assisted therapy can reduce depression and anxiety but also improve quality of life, mental health and spiritual and personal wellbeing. It didn’t just reduce psychological suffering; it also promoted positive interpersonal relationships and psychological states,” said Dr Dwyer.

In 1975, the Bolte Wing opened after a 1973 community fundraising campaign rallied Melbourne to build a state-of-the-art rehabilitation centre at St Vincent’s. Designed by Stephenson & Turner and opened by Premier R. J. Hamer, it became a place where patients could regain strength, skills and independence.

Now known as Building F, it houses the Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) unit and rehabilitation services, and continues to deliver better and fairer care. Always.

Today, we celebrate 50 years of regaining steps, improved moments, and hard-won milestones that have shaped the stories of countless Victorians.

Staff Nurse Kate Power once called the nurses’ home at St Vincent’s Hospital, Fitzroy, her home before enlisting in the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1915.

Her work took her from the wards of Egypt to the hospitals of India during the First World War, caring for soldiers in harsh and often dangerous conditions. Sadly, in August 1916, Kate contracted cholera, passing away at the Colaba War Hospital in Bombay.

Thanks to Australian War Nurses for sharing her story.

At St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, our Emergency Department includes a dedicated Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) Hub - an integrated, specialist-led service providing immediate support to people in crisis.

This collaborative model brings together emergency clinicians, mental health specialists, and AOD teams to offer trauma-informed, person-centred care when it’s needed most. “We see people from all walks of life and treat everyone with respect,” says Emergency Nurse Olivia Bollington. “We listen and involve them in their care.”

The average length of stay for those attending the Hub is 40 per cent shorter than the average length of stay they would have experienced in our ED as part of the general mix of patients.

It’s part of a national St Vincent’s commitment to caring for people experiencing mental health challenges, addiction, and disadvantage - across our hospitals, outreach teams and digital services.

St Vincent’s is proud to be part of the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s first-ever Collaborative Research Accelerator Grant - a landmark $25 million investment to address the most urgent and unsolved challenges in breast cancer.

Led by the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the five-year ‘AllClear’ program is focused on stopping breast cancer recurrence, with the goal of halving deaths from the disease.

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney medical oncologist, Associate Professor Rachel Dear, is the program’s lead and co-investigator, working to uncover how dormant cancer cells survive in bone and how they can be detected and eliminated before reawakening and causing metastatic breast cancer.

This is NBCF’s largest research investment in its 30-year history.
