The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service would like to acknowledge, respect, celebrate, and show gratitude for the steadfast leadership of Arrernte, Gurdanji woman Pat Turner AM, following the announcement of her retirement as CEO of NACCHO Aboriginal Health Australia.

Pat has dedicated her life to advancing the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and strengthening Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations across the country.

VAHS CEO Michael Graham has had the utmost pleasure on serving with Pat on the NACCHO board, working collaboratively with dedicated advocates for creating meaningful change in Aboriginal health.

Pat's leaves behind her a legacy of lasting reform for Aboriginal health in Australia, putting our voices at front of mind for governments, holding them to account to mend the systems that have failed us, and compelling them to invest in self-determined, Aboriginal-led solutions.

We wish Pat the very best in her retirement and congratulate her on a stellar career. VAHS also welcomes the appointment of NACCHO's Deputy CEO Dr Dawn Casey PSM FAHA as the new CEO of NACCHO, and looks forward to continuing our vital work together 🖤💛❤️

Aboriginal women are the backbone of VAHS and wider Community Controlled Health, overcoming colonial racism and the roadblocks that came with it to build the Culturally safe spaces for Mob to prioritise their health we know and access to this day ✊🏾

Blak women lead, nurture, and grow the oldest living Culture on earth, carrying the wisdom and Cultural traditions from the matriarchs before them 🪶

May we know them, may we raise them, may we be them 👩🏾

Our Women's Group was lucky to welcome Aunty April Clark for a Cultural workshop last week making ochre masks 🧖‍♀️

Aunty April facilitated a session rich with knowledge, conversation, and connection, and we are grateful she shared her wisdom with us 🖤💛❤️

Every Wednesday our Community of women comes together at VAHS Preston for lunch, yarns, and strengthening our bonds. If you'd like to join us, come along from 11am-2pm 📅

Mungara and Tracey (pictured) and JT and Kahli joined Reservoir East Primary School for their back to school event, encouraging Koori kids to be at school on time and ready to learn in 2026 🍎

Our team put on a pancake and fresh fruit breakfast as a positive incentive for punctual attendance and support for families doing it tough, ensuring they have access to breakfast 🥞

Are you up to date on your measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine? 💉

The Victorian Department of Health has warned of an increased risk of measles at new exposure sites across Victoria, including in south-east and northern metro Melbourne and Melbourne Airport ❗

Victorians aged 20-60 may be eligible for free measles vaccines - so yarn with your GP, clinic, or Aboriginal Health Worker to check your vaccination history and protect yourself and your Mob 🏥

For the full list of exposure sites, visit the Victorian Department of Health website. If you visited a site and have symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a rash, contact your health worker to get a test, isolate yourself, and notify your suspected case by calling 1300 651 160 ☎️

We were pleased to welcome The Honorary Dr Daniel Mulino to tour our St Albans clinic in his capacity as Member for Fraser 🏥

Minister Mulino saw firsthand the wonderful healthcare and Community engagement work our team in the west do 🩺

He yarned with CEO Michael Graham, COO Gavin Brown, and St Albans Practice Manager Shainayer Peachey about ensuring the longevity of our St Albans clinic into the future, so we can continue to provide our services in west metropolitan Melbourne.
