“Can I get pregnant if I have heavy periods?”

Georgia Marrion, Senior Fertility Naturopath + Nutritionist, gets asked this all the time.

The answer is yes - absolutely 🤍

But heavy bleeding can be a sign your body needs support.

If you’re:
• Soaking through products every 1–2 hours 🩸
• Passing large clots
• Bleeding longer than 7 days
• Feeling exhausted or dizzy during your period 😮‍💨

…it’s worth looking into.

Heavy periods may impact:
• Iron levels and ovulation 💉
• Egg quality 🥚
• Energy and resilience ⚡
• Conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, PCOS or thyroid imbalance 🧬

The good news? With the right assessment and personalised support, many causes can be improved 🌿

Our naturopaths work with you to:
• Explore potential root drivers
• Support iron and key nutrients
• Help regulate and strengthen your cycle
• Create a fertility plan tailored to you ✨

You don’t have to “just put up with it.”
And you don’t have to navigate it alone.

If heavy periods are affecting your cycles or fertility, we’d love to support you.

International Women’s Day always brings us back to the values that shaped Fertile Ground from the very beginning.

This clinic was built on collaboration.

For more than 25 years, practitioners, staff and community have come together here with a shared purpose - to support people through fertility, pregnancy, postpartum and whole-person health.

At its heart, that collaboration has always carried something else within it: women supporting women.

Every day we see practitioners sharing knowledge, encouraging each other to grow, and showing deep care for the people who walk through our doors. Our staff team holds the centre of the clinic with warmth and professionalism, creating the environment that allows this work to happen.

As directors, we feel a deep sense of custodianship of this organism called Fertile Ground. Each year thousands of people place their trust in this clinic, and with that comes a responsibility to hold the container for the culture, integrity and collaborative spirit that allows it to continually flourish.

We believe something powerful happens when women choose collaboration, generosity and shared purpose. Over time it creates strong practitioners, supported families and communities that care for one another. It is a culture we remain deeply committed to caring for and protecting.

Today we celebrate the women who make this place what it is - our practitioners and staff team - and also the many women in our community who trust us with their care, support one another, and nurture their families every day. Happy International Women’s Day.

“My fertility specialist told me to take CoQ10… but why?”
naturopath.nutritionist and senior fertility and pregnancy naturopath at Fertile Ground says it’s one of the most common supplements used in fertility care for both men and women.

CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) is a nutrient your body naturally produces that helps your cells create energy and protect themselves from oxidative stress.
When it comes to reproduction, this matters.

Eggs and s***m are some of the most energy-demanding cells in the body, relying heavily on healthy mitochondria to function well.

Research suggests CoQ10 may help support:
- s***m function and motility
- egg (oocyte) quality
- mitochondrial energy production
- early embryo development

Our natural production of CoQ10 declines with age, which is one reason it is commonly used as part of fertility support protocols.

However, the form, dose and timing can vary between individuals, which is why supplements are best personalised with guidance.

If you’re preparing for pregnancy - whether naturally or through IVF - the right nutritional support can make a meaningful difference.

Our fertility naturopaths have been supporting Melbourne families through preconception, IVF and pregnancy care for over 25 years.

Save this post for later or share it with someone preparing for pregnancy.

If you’re newly pregnant, you might be wondering…”Is acupuncture safe in the first trimester?”

We hear this question all the time.

For many people, the first trimester can feel like a big adjustment - physically, emotionally, and energetically.

Your body is doing something extraordinary, and sometimes a little extra support can make that transition feel a bit easier.

In this video, Fertile Ground acupuncturist Tara Hanaphy talks about how acupuncture can be used during early pregnancy, and how we often integrate it alongside obstetric and midwifery care.

Many people choose acupuncture during pregnancy to help support things like sleep, digestion, physical discomfort and overall wellbeing as the body adapts.

At Fertile Ground in Fitzroy, our acupuncture team works alongside your wider healthcare team to support you through pregnancy and beyond.

If you’re curious about whether acupuncture might be supportive for you during pregnancy, we’re always happy to chat.

Pelvic and hip discomfort is something we see often in clinic.

It can show up during pregnancy, after birth, or simply build over time through posture, stress and the physical load of daily life.

Michelle works through the pelvis, hips and surrounding musculature with a steady, attentive approach.

Her sessions are particularly supportive during pregnancy and postpartum, and also for women navigating ongoing pelvic tension more broadly.

If something has felt tight, heavy or uncomfortable for a while, it’s worth paying attention to.

Michelle is available at Fertile Ground in Fitzroy.

If you’re moving through IVF, the window around embryo transfer matters.

At Fertile Ground, acupuncture is regularly included and commonly sought by people around this time as part of broader fertility care.

In this video, Chinese medicine practitioner and acupuncturist, Tara Hanaphy, shares how she supports you in the lead-up to a cycle, provides treatment around transfer day, and continues care into early pregnancy where appropriate - working collaboratively with your broader care providers.

Her approach centres on whole-body wellbeing. This may include attention to circulation, nervous system regulation, stress modulation and other aspects of health during what can be a physically and emotionally demanding process.

If you’re preparing for a transfer, or are in the early stages of pregnancy, now is the time to plan your support.

We love beautiful, practical, healthy things.

These hot wheat bags and eye pillows are handmade for us by Mel, a local maker. Little spots. Soft nature patterns. The prints delight our happy hearts. They’re in our treatment rooms every day.
On bellies.
On lower backs.
Over tired eyes.

And then they can go home with you and become part of your quiet rituals too 🫶

For period pain, womb warmth, for shoulders that have been holding a lot, for curling up in the seasonal changes, for nourishing sleep. The heat that gently invites you to soften.

We have large and medium wheat bags and matching eye pillows in clinic at 33 Smith Street 🫶

We’re so pleased to welcome Olivia Sizeland to the acupuncture team at Fertile Ground.

Olivia works with the body as an organised, intelligent system - tracing patterns, listening for pathways, noticing where flow has quietly become restricted.

Her approach reflects the foundations of Chinese medicine: that the body is inherently ordered and always communicating.

Olivia’s treatments are gentle, precise and deeply attentive. Alongside acupuncture, she often weaves in subtle cranial work - light touch through the craniosacral system, supporting nervous system regulation and encouraging a shift from stress into rest.

She supports people with reproductive health concerns, navigating fertility and IVF, moving through hormonal transitions, recovering from stress, and tending to the slower imbalances that build over time.

Olivia is available with us Wednesdays and Saturdays 🫶
