The Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne is the longest-running Ashtanga school in Victoria and was the first Yoga school in Melbourne solely dedicated to the practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The Centre was founded in 1993 by Greg and Tracy Cooper. It is on the map of must-visit Ashtanga schools, hosting many of the world's leading practitioners over its 20-year life, including Manju Jois, Louisa S

ear, David Swenson, Graeme Northfield, Dena Kingsberg, John Scott, Nicki Knoff, Matthew Sweeney, Tomas Zorzo and Gregor Maehle. Today there are several longstanding, well-regarded and highly committed teachers at the Centre - including Amanda Stead, Eoin McCarthy, Douglas Brook, Leah Kazuko Casey, Tracey Alamanos and Founders Greg & Tracy Cooper. All teach with respect to the traditional Mysore style but bring subtly different approaches to the practice experience. Several have trained directly under the late Ashtanga Yoga Master Sri K. The ongoing goal of the Centre is to continue to provide students at all levels of experience with a learning environment that is empowering, nurturing and therapeutic. Timetable

Our Wednesday Inner City Retreats are back by popular demand! 🧘🏽

Join Greg and Tracy for 6 Wednesdays throughout the Winter months for an opportunity to expand the space around your Yoga practice.

We can’t always make time to leave the city for recovery, so this could be a special opportunity to take time out for yourself and replenish.

The inspiration comes from wanting to share just how peaceful the studio feels in the middle of the day, as well as building community around our Yoga practice.

Our focus for these sessions will be on accessible Asana, Pranayama, chanting and quiet reflecting practices as a retreat-style experience.

We will include ample time for deep relaxation and sharing our Yoga and life experiences in a trusted and supporting environment.

The retreats will also include a healthy Vegetarian lunch spread, prepared by Greg and Tracy 🍲 🥗 🥕

Classes will run between 10.30am and 2.30pm, with lunch served around 12.30pm.

Here are the dates:

☞ June 12th
☞ June 19th
☞ July 3rd
☞ July 24th
☞ August 21st
☞ August 28th

Cost for all 6 retreats is $350, but you can drop into a single one for $70.

Hope to see you there!

ૐ Happy Holidays from all of us at the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne ૐ

As we roll out our mats for the last few times this year, we'd love to take a moment to acknowledge the wild ride that 2023 was for our little Yoga family...

Welcoming Monica Gauci, Gregor Maehle, John Scott and Debi Hendra, saying goodbye to Dan, saying goodbye to a few beloved teachers and students who moved away, and to a wonderful, dearest student who lost her battle to brain cancer 🕯️

We made new Yoga friends, students and teachers, and even welcomed a couple bubbas or expected bubbas 👩🏽‍🍼🤰🏻

Thanks to all of you, whether we have seen you hundreds of times, just a couple, or you are only just thinking about starting your practice. Thank you for being here, reading this 📿 🤍

And if you have been with us throughout all of that, thank you for supporting us, for caring for each other, always bringing a smile to our faces when we see your lovely heads popping into the Shala.

It's been wonderful having Greg, Tracy and Amanda to support us both in our practice but also with precious advice and support in keeping the Shala alive. We look forward to 100 more years of you three 😜

So here is to a joyful, merry holiday season, Christmas (if you celebrate), and a happy 2024 🥳 We look forward to making new memories with you!

Love,

Matt, Ilaria and the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne team

❣️ ✦ PS ✦ Remember that we will remain open every day throughout the holidays, including a free community Christmas class followed by brunch together tomorrow. Bookings essential through Momence or our website.

And bear with us if we're a little less responsive than usual during this time. Our team is smaller over the holidays, but rest assured, we'll get back to you as soon as we can. 💌💫

…And just like that, our lovely time with Gregor Maehle has come to an end…

What a wonderful 8 days it has been. Thank you, Gregor, for the usual kindness, wisdom, patience and compassion. You will be missed, until next time 🙏🏼

And to all the beautiful, committed Yogis who joined us, thank you for being a part of this adventure. Thank you for all the questions, for the sincerity of your practice and for your dedication to self realisation.

As Gregor said, self realisation is our stepping stone towards God realisation. We very much look forward to continuing to support you and provide a safe, nurturing space for you to embark on this spiritual journey.

If anyone has any messages you would like to share with Gregor, please pass them on and we will make sure to let him know.

Much love and peace,
Ilaria and Matt 🌱

Please join us in saying farewell to Dan tomorrow 😢

This Monday will be Dan's last Mysore class at the Shala before returning home to warmer climes.

One of the loveliest, most gentle souls, Dan's dedication and commitment to the practice and the community has been an inspiration for all of us, and we are very sad to see him go... But we wish him all the best in his future journey and - who knows? - perhaps we might even see him every so often back in Melbourne!

Hope to see you tomorrow for Mysore, where we will have also have a little get-together and something to eat with Dan before we start our weeks.

With love 🌱

We are delighted to be hosting ✨ John Scott ✨ in just over a week here at the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne 📿

In the weekend starting Friday 17th February, he will be running 3 counted Led Asana classes and 2 theory and technique classes covering topics such as breath and gaze, as well as Yoga philosophy and mantra.

The traditional counted method will be leading us on a journey inwards, helping us to stay focused: for some it will feel new, for others it will be like coming home.

The weekend workshop will be followed by a second one during the following week, a Mysore-style intensive in which you will get to work with John in a small group of only 10 students (the weekend workshop is a pre-requisite for this intensive). There are two groups available: a group starting at 6am and one starting at 8am.

He doesn't come to Australia all too often, so if you are here and love the traditional Ashtanga method, make sure to join us to hear his incredible wisdom, learn from his experience, and share in his infectious fun and love of Yoga.

Prices for the weekend workshop and weekly intensive are $330 and $200 respectively. You can book online through our website, or on the Momence App. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions.

Looking forward to seeing you there...

Om Shanti
