As many of you know, I was diagnosed as gluten intolerant 22 years ago and have been on a strict gluten free diet ever since - life changing! Just recently I tested positive for the Coeliac Disease genes after being incorrectly informed by an ill informed GP many years ago that I didn't have the genes. Symptoms of coeliac disease are varied and not just gut related. If you have ongoing health concerns, I encourage you to take this quick 3 minute quiz to find out more. And if you have any questions about living a gluten free life, hit me up.

Simple food swaps can help stretch your food budget further. ⠀

Swap meat for beans: beans are a great alternative and cost a fraction of the price, and can be stored in your pantry for months. ⠀

Swap fresh vegetables for frozen vegetables: frozen vegetables are a cheap and easy swap. You’ll never be short on veg for a quick meal. ⠀

Swap fresh fish for canned fish: canned fish like tuna is a healthy and cheap swap! It’s cheap, lasts months on the shelf, and is the perfect quick addition to any meal. Try it in pasta, salad or fish cakes. ⠀

Many of you know I work as a private practice dietitian, but what you may not know is that I am also an aged care dietitian, and I visit multiple residential aged care facilities around Sydney. These pictures of me were taken on the job, in PPE gear. It can be challenging at times working in aged care dressed like this because many of the residents I see have dementia and hearing loss so communication can be really tricky. My voice is muffled by the mask, and my facial expressions and lips are hidden.

During COVID lockdown, visitors other than essential workers are usually not able to enter an aged care facility, except in extenuating circumstances, and this means that residents are not able to see their loved ones. This can be very confusing and upsetting for some residents, particularly those with dementia. Loss of appetite, weight loss, anxiety, a decline in overall wellbeing, as well as malnutrition, are some of the consequences of the necessary restrictions, and that is despite the wonderful work of the care staff.

This week is Dementia Action Week, so if you know someone living with dementia, reach out to them to let them know you’re thinking of them. If you’re not in lockdown, spending some time with them can make a big difference to their physical and emotional wellbeing.

IBS symptoms? Just see your dietitian for evidenced-based support. I am a Monash University FODMAP-diet-trained dietitian in the treatment of IBS. Seeing a qualified dietitian should be your first stop.

Colonic irrigation and IBS 💧💩

- We often get asked about colonic irrigation, otherwise known as hydrotherapy or colon cleansing here at Monash FODMAP. Unfortunately, there is virtually no evidence to suggest that colonic irrigation is effective in people with IBS, and it may pose several risks

WHAT IS IT?
The process involves warm water (40 – 60L), often with added herbs or probiotics being flushed into your colon, via a tube in your re**um. The water fills your large bowel and ‘flushes’ out the contents of your colon.

DOES IT WORK?
In 2009, a systematic review published in American Journal of Gastroenterology looked at the clinical effects of colonic cleansing for general health promotion. The review concluded that the current literature did not support the notion that colonic irrigation improves or promotes general wellbeing (2). Unfortunately, we do not know the effects of this therapy in people with IBS.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
- Imbalance of minerals and electrolytes – disturbances could lead dehydration and more seriously to heart failure and kidney damage.
- Interference/removal of bacteria that line the colon
- Infections such as Hepatitis B and C
- Perforation of intestine

If you are considering undergoing colonic irrigation, talk to your GP or Gastroenterologist first so you are very clear on the possible risks and benefits. Despite the marketing claims, it may be that your effort, time and money would be better spent on other, more evidence based therapies.

Great article about the guidelines for healthy eating. My clients are usually quite surprised at how many serves of each of the core food groups are recommended, every day. https://www.healthier.qld.gov.au/guide/what-you-should-eat-at-every-age/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=hh20-21&utm_content=traffic&utm_term=june9_eatage&fbclid=IwAR066NBWVtG4ccB99t6WejCRSRvATiSpyFISB6WGxApRR6mykN43lMhA4j8

You’ve heard about having 5 serves of veggies and 2 fruits a day, but did you know that the recommended number of daily serves for each food group actually changes as you progress through adulthood?
