First Avenue Family Practice

First Avenue Family Practice We are a team of GPs and allied health staff committed to providing high quality medical care to the whole family.

14/12/2022

Our goal at First Avenue Family Practice has always been to provide the highest quality healthcare. We aim to provide this in a way that was affordable and accessible to the community.

As with other small businesses, we have faced rising costs of running our practice. Your fees cover not only the doctors, nurses and receptionists you see, but also significant insurance costs, software, IT support, and all of our medical equipment to name a few. We have also found that increasingly, patients are requiring more time and care with their complex problems.

Medicare rebates do not, and were never intended to cover the full cost of medical services. Medicare rebates are provided by the Government to help you cover the cost of your medical care. Since Medicare began 40 years ago, the Government indexation of Medicare Schedule Fees has not kept pace with real increases in practice costs. In addition, Medicare continues to reward rapid turnover of patients, which is against the ethos of First Avenue Family Practice.

To sustain the high level of care, we are now required to privately bill all patients from 1st of February 2022. Please contact us to see a copy of our fee schedule.

We understand this will be a significant cost for some of our patients, however, our business cannot continue to provide the high-quality care we are known for with our current fee structure. This has been a difficult decision made by the practice for our future survival.

We encourage you to raise this issue with your local Federal Government representative in the hopes that Medicare rebates more accurately reflect the cost of healthcare.

High school students would normally receive vaccinations at school in year 7 and year 10. Year 7 students receive one dose of Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine, also known as DTPa, as well as 2 doses of Human Papilloma Virus - HPV vaccine. This is the Gardasil vaccine. Year 10 students receive one dose of Meningococcal ACWY and are fully funded through Medicare.

Due to lockdown, some students may have missed out on these doses at school. Any GP practice is able to administer these vaccines free of charge and here we would bulk-bill the consultation.

The Meningococcal B vaccine (Bexsero) is also recommended by the National Immunisation Program at the same time as the ACYW vaccine, but it is not government funded in NSW. It is available at GP practices at a cost of around $130 each for 2 doses.

These vaccines are important so please consult your doctor if you believe your child has missed their doses.

Kind regards,
The Team at First Avenue Family Practice

Worried about Astra Zeneca? Take a look at how our brains evaluate risk.

The reason I’m worrying far more about AstraZeneca’s side effects than I probably should reveals how our brains think about risk. And how they often get it wrong.

A message from Sophie:

Dear friends and family my wonderful practice nurse Alison has to return to Western Australia just after Christmas.
She has been a truly integral part of the practice this year and we will miss her greatly.
I am looking for a new nurse now . Hoping to train the nurse while Ali is still here .
General practice nursing is well paid , interesting and important. The hours and conditions are family friendly .
If you know of anyone who might be interested please in box me .
I’m resending this message in messenger to people who are most likely to have contacts .
The practice is in the inner west , First Ave Family Practice .

Thankyou all

Regards Sophie
