Medicare was launched in 1984 and was designed to support all Australians.

A lot has changed since then. Rising rates of complex and chronic health problems means patients need to spend longer with their doctor.

But we know that GPs are not adequately supported to spend the time you need with your patients.

Recent bulk billing incentives will undoubtedly help many vulnerable people and some practices, but we know that not every practice can afford to absorb the gap whilst being able to keep their doors open.

We need comprehensive reform that ensures all Australians have access to affordable, high-quality, sustainable general practice care.

Learn More: Modernise Medicare

That’s why the AMA is calling for a new GP Medicare structure. It’s a structure developed over 18 months with input from GPs across the country, designed to Modernise Medicare.

The AMA’s Modernise Medicare plan supports longer consultations, better funds delivery of comprehensive healthcare and removes disincentives to delivering the kind of care we know GPs desperately want to provide, while also reducing the number of people delaying GP visits due to costs.

The AMA’s Modernise Medicare plan is comprehensive. That’s why it also calls for funding to create a true medical home — where our GPs work with nurses, mental health professionals, physiotherapists, diabetes educators and other healthcare workers as part of a true team.

Supporting a connected healthcare system under one roof would go a long way to improving healthcare and helping patients.

But we need your help.

Floodwater is dirty and dangerous, and it can make you sick. 🚫💧

In the aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, we're urging people to stay away from floodwater.

Sharks, snakes and spiders have been seen in floodwater, along with sharp objects and flood debris.

Floodwater is often contaminated by human waste (poo) from overflowing sewerage or septic systems, and by agricultural or industrial wastes and chemicals.

There is a higher risk of infection by coming into contact with polluted water or soil.

You could end up with diarrhoea and vomiting, wound infections, dermatitis, conjunctivitis, and serious diseases like leptospirosis.

You could also be injured by animal bites or physical hazards lurking beneath the water.

To avoid infection:
💧 Wear solid boots or shoes (not thongs) if you must enter shallow water.
💧 Wear gloves when handling items contaminated by floodwater.
💧 Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating and after contact with floodwater or soil.
💧 Wash any household items or areas, including hard surfaces like floors or paved areas, that were contaminated by floodwater.

If the power goes off—is your food?

If you lose power to your home, keep your fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible.

Refrigerated food can be kept in a closed fridge for about four hours, and frozen food can be kept in the freezer for 24 hours.

Eating food that's off can make you very sick. 🤮

Here's a guide on what to do with your food. 👇

If in doubt, throw it out. 🗑️

During a tropical cyclone or flood, it's possible to lose access to electricity and water supply, or water supplies might become unsafe to drink. 💧🚫

Having access to safe drinking water during and immediately after a disaster is one of the most important parts of protecting your health.

To prepare:
💧 Fill up all available bottles, jugs, kettles and pots with safe drinking water before the cyclone crosses.
🚰 Have 10L of drinking water ready for every person, and pet.
🛁 Fill up your bathtub or a bucket so that you are able to flush your toilet if the water gets cut off.

If you have small children or pets, please be aware that a full bathtub presents a drowning risk. You can fill up sinks and buckets instead and store them in a safe place. 🪣

Your local council or water utility will alert you if they know or suspect the safety of your water has been compromised. Listen to your local radio or check your local council's website (if possible) for updates.
