Stopping is when a child replaces a long tricky sound like /f/, /s/, /z/ with a short, quick sound like /p/, /b/, /d/.

It’s called “stopping” because the airflow gets stopped instead of flowing out smoothly 🛑

This is a typical part of early speech development, but often fades by age 4.

Some examples of stopping include:
🌟 fun ➡️ pun
🌟 sun ➡️ tun
🌟 van ➡️ ban

Fronting is when a child says a sound made in the front of the mouth instead of a sound made in the back of the mouth 👄

Some examples of fronting include:
🌟 car ➡️ tar

Final consonant deletion is when a child leaves off the last sound (consonant) in a word.

This can make words sound shorter and harder to understand, but it is a typical part of early speech development. For most children it is eliminated from their speech at age 3, after this it is considered delayed and may require assistance from a speech pathologist.

Some examples of final consonant deletion include:
🌟 cat ➡️ ca
🌟 book ➡️ boo
🌟 bed ➡️ be
