You’ve probably heard it before—“walk 10,000 steps a day.”
But did you know that number didn’t come from health guidelines? It actually started as marketing!
In 1964, a Japanese company released a pedometer called the Manpo-kei, or “10,000 steps metre.” The idea caught on—partly because the character for 10,000 (万) looks like a person walking. It was simple, catchy, and people loved it.
Fast forward to today: does 10,000 still hold up?
✅For most adults, especially older ones, studies show 6,000–8,000 steps can deliver big health benefits—better heart health, lower disease risk, and even longer life.
✅Younger or active folks might still enjoy aiming higher at 10000 steps.
✅What matters most? Regular movement, consistency, and a bit of intensity. A brisk 20-minute walk might beat 3 hours of pottering.
