Myth 3: Autistic people lack empathy.
Autistic people do experience the full range of human emotions, including empathy, however they might show their emotions differently.
Research into autism and empathy has evolved over the years. Initially, it was thought that the absence of empathy was a characteristic found in all autistic people. However, we now know this trait exists on a spectrum in people with ASD, just as it does in neurotypical individuals.
Autistic people think differently, which can be one of their many strengths. Yet, because of this, some of their social interactions and behaviours are misunderstood. Their actions might be seen as cold or harsh but this is not because of a lack of empathy, it is just that they present their emotions in a different way.
Myth 2: Autism only affects boys.
While autism is more commonly diagnosed in boys, there are many girls on the autism spectrum. One of the reasons many females aren’t diagnosed (or are diagnosed later in life) is simply that they’re better at masking their autistic traits.
Failing to recognise autism in girls and young women early can cause a myriad of issues. The longer these girls and young women are masking and internalising problems, the greater the stress and anxiety that grows within. Sadly, the statistics show that females with autism are far more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, eating disorders and other behaviours such as self-harm.
In the simplest terms, the sooner diagnosis can happen the sooner the autistic female can receive tailored support for her development and wellbeing, thereby giving her the best chance to thrive, at the earliest possible age.
There is a saying that if you have met one person on the autism spectrum, you have met one person on the autism spectrum.
Every individual is unique, with their own idiosyncrasies, interests and hobbies, whether they are on the autism spectrum or not! Let's address a few common misconceptions about autism.
Myth 1: Everyone is ‘a little bit Autistic’.
Most people can relate to or understand some Autistic experiences. However, just because we can relate to something doesn’t mean we fully understand someone’s situation. Although it is good to try to find ways to connect with people, some Autistic people feel this saying diminishes the challenges they face, so their problems aren’t taken seriously. It's important to remember that Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person’s brain develops and functions.
Due to recent growth in The First Choice Team, we have increased speech pathology and psychology appointment availability and can commence regular, ongoing therapy right now to new and existing clients. Woo hoo! 💃
Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia. Interestingly, more women experience anxiety than men. The statistics are quite confronting: one in three women and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage in their life.
It’s important to realise that anxiety does get better, but it is not completely cured by treatment. What treatment CAN DO is equip a person with tools and strategies to manage anxiety, so that they can live a full and rewarding life and not be limited by the condition. 💪
First Choice Allied Health have regular therapy appointments available immediately, so please reach out if you or a loved one need support.

Autistic burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and cognitive exhaustion that results when an autistic person have been exposed to an overwhelming load of sensory, social, and environmental demands and stimulus. Like many aspects of autism, burnout varies greatly from person to person.
A psychologist can help someone with autistic burnout by providing a safe, validating space to explore their experiences and identify the underlying causes of the burnout.
Psychologists support the person in reducing demands, setting boundaries, and creating a sustainable routine that includes rest and self-care. They also offer tailored strategies to manage anxiety or depression, rebuild self-identity, and develop self-advocacy skills to prevent future burnout and promote long-term wellbeing.
