I really can’t believe we are able to say this, but thanks to the recent arrival of our two lovely GP Registrars - Dr Erin and Dr Naomi - we can now offer same day appointments 👏👏👏

As many of you know, it’s been a really, really long time since we have been able to do that - too long to be honest.

We have had a lot people ask if this means we are accepting new patients and unfortunately at this stage we aren’t able to. That decision hasn’t been made lightly, but it is necessary to ensure that our patient caseload remains manageable for Dr Draper once our GP registrars move on to continue their specialist training in another community.

Our mission when we opened MAM was to offer the highest quality care to our patients by a team that genuinely cared. That meant offering patients continuity of care, reasonable access to appointments and embedding a multi-disciplinary approach as the standard model of care at our practice.

In recent times due to doctor shortages and in particular Forbes and Parkes, it has been extremely difficult to offer reasonable access to appointments, especially when Dr Draper was working as a solo-practitioner.

That’s why we are delighted to be able to offer our patients same-day GP appointments once again. It’s also why we aren’t able to take on new patients at this point - because we take being your family doctor very seriously and if we do it, we want to do it well. For us, doing it well means being able to do it in a sustainable way for our incredible clinicians who work tirelessly for our community.

So, for our patients that have been putting off that visit to the doctor now is really good time to make an appointment because there is lots of flexibility - including some before and after school time slots which we know are always highly sought after. The easiest way to book is via the link below 👇 or on the HotDoc app.

We still cannot believe that we’re welcoming two GP registrars to Forbes next week. Feeling very lucky!

Our second trainee is Dr Naomi Goonetilleke.

Dr Goonetilleke grew up in Sydney and studied medicine at Western Sydney University, followed by two years of hospital training at Westmead Hospital.

She chose to pursue general practice as a specialty because of the variety it brings and the opportunity to make a difference in patients’ everyday health. She also loves the continuity of care and being able to build long term connections with patients and their families.

“In my spare time, I love being out in nature and getting some sunshine, exploring new places and finding my favourite food spots. I’m really looking forward to exploring Forbes and getting to know the local community. I’m excited to learn from and contribute to the broad range of rural medicine, and I look forward to joining the team!”

Bookings are now available for existing patients only with Dr Goonetilleke from Monday 11 August.

You may have already heard our very exciting news… From August 4th we welcome TWO new GP Registrars to our practice 👏👏👏

We are delighted to introduce the first of our new trainee GP’s - Dr Erin McKenna - who is relocating from Dubbo for her second GP term.

Dr McKenna is originally from Nowra on the south coast and moved to Sydney to study engineering. This obviously didn’t work out and she ended up graduating with a Bachelor of Medical Science before entering post graduate medicine at the University of Sydney where she had the opportunity to move to Dubbo for her final two years for clinical placement. She stayed on at Dubbo Base Hospital as a junior doctor which solidified her choice to be a GP as she did not enjoy hospital work and was desperate to know how patient’s got on after they left hospital. Dr McKenna is looking forward to living and working in a smaller community and learning about Forbes and its health challenges.

“I’m excited for another river walking track and seeking out the best coffee to take on my walks. I recently got two kittens and when not taking a million photos of them being cute I devour as many books as possible, dreaming of a home library.”

We can’t wait to have Dr McKenna in the practice very soon and she has appointments available for existing patients from Monday 11 August.

Today we farewelled one of the kindest, most caring souls you will ever meet! Our beautiful Ange is leaving Forbes and it was an emotional goodbye.

We know our patients will miss her gentle nature. She had a way of making every single person she came into contact with like she had all the time in the world for them and always put people at ease.

My sister and sister-in-law both worked as juniors with Ange at our local pharmacy for years before she joined us at MAM. I always remember them both saying how kind she was. How right they were.

Ange, your genuine care for others is something that has always stood out. It really was a privilege getting to work with you. You did things for us - big and small - that I will never forget and feel deeply grateful for. You see the good in everyone, something that is rare these days and you do a thing I aspire to, you always leave people better than you found them.

We wish you and Dave nothing but the very best for your next adventure. You both deserve all the good things. Thank you 🥺❤️🌈

Our much loved GP Registrar, Dr McKenzie clocked off for the last time this evening. To say she will be missed is an understatement.

It’s hard to quantify the impact one doctor can make in a small community in 12 months. One thing I know for sure is that the best doctors are always incredibly modest and even a tad oblivious to the tremendous difference they make to lives of individuals, families and the community at large. Grace falls into this category. Her departure will leave a mark on us all.

Grace epitomizes what most of us yearn for in a GP - compassion, kindness, capability, professionalism, presence and most importantly the ability to create a safe space.

Whilst she must - by virtue of her training - move to another community she has been (along with her partner Jayden), a vocal advocate for why more doctors from the city should go rural. We need more brilliant young doctors like Grace to come and make a life changing difference in our community. We thank her for being part of the crusade to encourage more of that.

But for now, we say farewell and THANK YOU. From all of us. It has been a privilege. Your future is bright Amazing Grace 💙
