"Experience of the phenomenal capacity of our birthing body can give us an enduring sense of our own power as women. Birth is the beginning of life; the beginning of mothering, and of fathering. We all deserve a good beginning."

One of my favourite recipes for postpartum, a great one to save for later to prep for your own postpartum or support a new mama with a nourishing home cooked meal ✨

Tumeric Lentil Dahl 👇🏻

You will Need:

1 large yellow onion

2 tbsp ghee, coconut or olive oil

3 large cloves of garlic

1 tbsp fresh grated ginger

1 diced capsicum

2 large carrots peeled and diced

1 ½ cups red lentils

1 can unsweetened coconut milk

3 cups vegetable broth

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 cup baby spinach

1 tsp turmeric

2 ½ tsp curry powder

1 tsp cumin

Juice from 1 lemon

1 tsp sea salt or to taste

¼ tsp red pepper flakes (I usually skip these for postpartum mamas)

Black pepper to taste

Instructions:

Mince garlic and chop onion.

Sauté in a large pot with chosen oil or ghee and fresh ginger until the onion is translucent (About 5 minutes)

Add in the diced carrots and bell pepper and saute for an additional 5 minutes.

Add remaining ingredients (aside from spinach) and bring to a low boil.

Cover and let simmer for 20-25 minutes or until it is your desired consistency.

Add spinach during the final few minutes of cooking to let it wilt.

Taste and adjust seasonings as desired.

Enjoy x

THE MAGICAL GOLDEN HOURS ✨
The hours after birth are a precious time of transition for mother and baby following labour and birth. Uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact provides the ideal environment for this transition, with many remarkable benefits for both mum and baby.

So what are the benefits?

✨ Fosters a strong sense of connection and security, supporting maternal and infant bonding
✨ Stabilises heart rate, temperature, breathing and oxygenation
✨ Stabilises and maintains baby's blood glucose levels
✨ Reduces stress hormones in both mum and baby
✨ Supports breastfeeding by triggering the baby's mammalian instincts to locate the breast and feed and stimulates the production of breast milk
✨ Boosts immune system through contact with beneficial bacteria on the parent's skin
✨ Helps to minimise uterine bleeding and supports the physiological birth of the placenta

To optimise this time, it is recommended to delay routine examinations and procedures for the first few hours and until after the first breastfeed.

15/12/2023

The human infant is the least neurologically mature primate at birth, born with only 25 percent of its adult brain volume. In our enthusiasm to push for infant independence we often forget that the infant's biology cannot change quite so quickly. Our babies depend on proximity and contact with a caregiver’s body, both day and night. Not only for nutritional needs but also because of the immaturity of their thermo-regulatory, immune and cardio-respiratory systems. All of these systems closely tied together promote efficient functioning of all of the infant’s immature organs and the central nervous system in general.

When looking at infant sleep, its important to note that there is not a one size fits all approach. There is a lot of variability in the amount of sleep each baby needs. Some babies with low sleep needs may only need to sleep 9 hrs across 24 hours. Whilst other babies may need much more, even up to 20hrs. There is usually not a single quick-fix strategy for working through sleep issues. Experimentation is key.

In the next few weeks we will dive further into sleep biology and gentle strategies to support sleep.

Stay tuned for more information and resources on biologically normal infant sleep ♡
