“Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life.”
— Rumi

So much is happening at the studio at the moment, and there is such a feeling of gratitude around.

If you walk into the studio currently, you’ll notice that the old bolster shelving has been moved into the reception area, new shelves have been built, walls painted, floors restored, and new artwork is beginning to emerge. If you look carefully, you can even see the stencil outlines appearing on the front wall above the main window.

What has touched me most is how naturally all of this has unfolded through the generosity of our community.

One Saturday, John — Jennifer’s husband — simply said, “Let’s move these shelves,” and suddenly we were all carrying bolsters and reorganising the space together, Jen included!

Then Myles came in and offered to repair the wall, sand and repaint the floor, and build beautiful new shelving, which he (and much help from Dana) completed this last weekend.

Linda has very generously offered to paint new murals for the studio walls and started at 8 pm last night — yes, Sunday night! It’s just wonderful.

Peter B and Mike were wash-stripping the studio floor and bringing in the scaffolding. Alaina washed all the blankets. Renalda continues to clean the studio magnificently and gently feng shui my endless mess.

You may also have noticed the gifts that quietly appear at the studio — lemons, limes, cucumbers, rosemary, and so many other treats generously brought in from members’ homes and gardens to share with everyone.

And so many others, without even being asked, have simply appeared and offered help, ideas, time, tools, encouragement, and support.

There is something profoundly beautiful about people freely giving their energy to help create a space they love. It is such a blessing to be part of that.

So I thought I would speak for a moment about gratitude.

There is so much written in scripture and in the great teachings about gratitude and the way it nourishes the soul.

“If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.”
— Meister Eckhart

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a privilege it is to be alive.”
— Marcus Aurelius

“Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”
— Thich Nhat Hanh

Professor Laurie Santos of Yale University runs one of the world’s most popular online courses on happiness and wellbeing, with over 5 million registered participants. A significant part of her research explores the effects of gratitude on human wellbeing.

She writes:

“Experiencing gratitude can increase your mood and lower your stress levels. It can even strengthen your immune system and lower your blood pressure. Experiencing gratitude also can make you feel a stronger social connection, which itself has a whole host of positive benefits.”

Those who practise yoga seem to know this already.

Perhaps one of the great gifts of yoga is not only the movement or the breath, but the community itself.

Recently, while classes were running, the new walkway outside was being built. Massive pylons were being hammered into the ground: bang, bang, bang, bang. It certainly was not the most peaceful soundtrack for savasana.

And then a realisation.

The banging wasn’t bombs dropping.

The sun was shining.
The birds were singing.
There was food in our bellies.
A roof over our heads.
The freedom to gather together and practise yoga in peace.

And when I looked around the room, there were smiling faces — people who genuinely care for and support one another.

Even the noise became part of something beautiful.

Not an interruption to peace, but a reminder of it.

There is so much to be grateful for:
the food in our bellies,
the freedom to practise yoga,
the ability to breathe in and out,
the beauty of the lake, the ocean, and the wildlife around us,
and the extraordinary privilege of living where we do.

But perhaps most wonderful of all is this:

Good Company. Satsang.

“The best form of good company is the communion of human beings seeking the truth.”
— Peter Whitfield

There can be few greater blessings than finding oneself among people who genuinely care for, support, encourage, and uplift one another.

So thank you.

Thank you for being part of this blessed community. ❤️

Letter from Freddie
Dear Grandpa,
This is my gingerbread man.
I made him at school.
I sent him to you because I want him to go on an adventure around the world to Australia.
Can you please send him back to me at my school and maybe take photos of where he has travelled and what he has been up to?
I miss you, Grandpa.
Can you please come and visit soon?
Lots of love,
Freddie
________________________________________
On Friday I received this letter from my four-year-old grandson, Freddie, who lives over 15,000 kilometres away in England.
Needless to say, I was completely moved.
Freddie sent me his gingerbread man and asked if I would take him on an adventure around Australia. Over the past few days we have been surfing at Black Head Beach, gone motorbike riding, driven a tractor and golf cart on Grandma’s farm, and, of course, attended yoga classes at Forster Yoga Studio. Freddie’s gingerbread man even practised Downward Dog and we both enjoyed a well-earned Savasana.
What touched me most was that, through this simple and beautiful request, it felt as though Freddie was right here with me.
On Sunday evening I read Freddie’s letter to Ali's Yin Yoga class. At the end of the practice, everyone gathered together and sent him a heartfelt greeting:
“G’day Freddie, from Australia!”
There was more love in the room than yogis at a Kumbh Mela.
Students came up afterwards to make sure I thanked Freddie for sharing his gingerbread man with us. In that moment, it truly felt like one big family.
That is the beauty of a yoga studio. More than a place to stretch, it is a satsang — a community of truth, friendship, and love.
Being so far away from my son, daughters and two grandsons, Albie (6) and Freddie(4) is not always easy, but I cannot imagine a more beautiful way to feel connected.
Thank you, Freddie.
And thank you to our yoga family.
Moments like this remind me that Forster Yoga Studio is more than a place to practise yoga.
It is an extension of my family.
Love knows no distance.

✨ Autumn Reset Workshop ✨

What a lovely saturday afternoon we shared together. It was great to see so many familiar (and new!) faces turn up- prioritising their mental & physical well-being.

That’s exactly WHY this studio exists in the first place.
We are your safe space.
That place you can always come back to when life gets hard, when the body gets stiff and the mind is restless.

We are here to heal together and create meaningful memories and connections in the process. 💟✨

Next community event:

A note from Peter
There’s a story that Jack Kornfield tells from when he was training as a Buddhist monk in the jungles of Thailand.

He was walking with his teacher, Ajahn Chah, when his teacher pointed to a large rock and asked,
“Is that rock heavy?”

Jack replied, “Yes, of course it’s heavy.”

Ajahn Chah said,
“Not if you don’t pick it up.”

As the season shifts into autumn, there’s something in that for us.

The trees let go of their leaves.
There is a natural shedding, a quiet release.

And with that, a kind of respite.

The tree is no longer trying to grow, to hold, to sustain.
It simply stands, without any need to worry about what comes next.

Perhaps it is the same for us.

We carry a lot. Thoughts, worries, tensions, stories about what is happening in our lives.

But much of what we carry is only in the head.

It feels real, because it is based on things that may be real.
But when it is in the head, it is just in the head.

Worrying about what might happen in the future has not happened yet.
Replaying something from the past is not happening now.

And yet we carry it as if it is.

Yoga does not make life disappear.
The pressures and responsibilities are still there.

But stepping into the studio, even for an hour, offers something simple and rare.

A kind of respite.

A chance to move, to breathe, to stretch, and to put things down for a while.

To step out of the mind and back into something more direct.

And the more regularly we practise this, the more we begin to respond differently to life, not because life has changed, but because we are not picking everything up quite so tightly.

It is a simple thing, but a powerful one.

So as we move into autumn, a good time to let a few things fall away.

See you on the mat.

Autumn Reset this weekend

As the season shifts, the body naturally slows.

This workshop offers a gentle, grounded reset, with a practical naturopathic approach guided by Saimaa.

You will explore simple ways to support digestion and reduce inflammation, gently release built up excess, calm the nervous system and feel more grounded, and create a daily rhythm that supports energy, mood and immunity.

We will close with a nourishing organic pumpkin soup, a simple way to ground and restore.

Mike will also be offering a short myofascial release session, adding a physical layer of release to the afternoon.

Suitable for all levels. Last spots available.

Bring a friend in May

There is something about this time of year that is better shared.

If there is someone in your life who has been meaning to try yoga, a friend, partner or neighbour, this is a lovely month to bring them along.

Any friend you bring in during May is welcome to join you, on us.
Just come together.

Wine and Flow at the end of May

We will round the month off with a relaxed Wine and Flow evening with Fernanda.

A gentle flow, a chance to unwind, and a glass of wine to finish.

Saturday 30 May, 5.00 to 7.00pm

Pilates Immersion in June

Fernanda is also offering a Pilates Immersion weekend in June.

A deeper dive into foundations and how Pilates supports your yoga practice.

Saturday 13 June, 2.00 to 5.00pm
Sunday 14 June, 10.00am to 1.00pm

You can join for a single session or the full weekend.

Philosophy Cafe returns

The Philosophy Cafe resumes on Friday 15 May.

A space to pause, reflect and explore ideas together. Always thoughtful and open to all.

Mats and bolsters final chance to claim

You may have noticed the mats and bolsters have been moved out of the storage shelves and are now in the corridor near the lifts.

If you have one there, or know someone who does, please collect it over the next couple of weeks.

After that, we will clear what remains. Items will be offered for a small donation with all proceeds going to charity, and then donated more broadly.

I will try to contact anyone whose name is on their items, but do feel free to spread the word.

We are also putting together something for winter. More on that soon.

A note from Emma Sternberg, Holistic Therapist

How do we let go of hurt and pain?

We know that holding on creates tension and dis ease. But letting go is rarely as simple as it sounds.

Sometimes we just need to be heard first, before our nervous systems are ready to release what they have been carrying.

Think of a child who comes to you with a small injury. They are not looking for a fix. They want a cuddle, a moment of connection, and then, when they feel held, that deep breath comes naturally. The tears let go on their own.

We never outgrow that need. The need to be seen, to feel safe, to find comfort in another.

So as the weather cools and the season turns toward shedding, let yourself release with gentleness. With help if you need it. With each other.

If you have something that needs to be heard, or need a little help letting go, Emma is available here at the studio.

About the New Class
Yin Yoga with Mantra Meditation
This 60-minute class blends the stillness of Yin Yoga with the quiet power of mantra meditation.

As you rest into each pose, the mind is gently guided towards a single word or sound, repeated silently within. This simple focus has a profoundly calming effect, helping to steady the mind, harmonise the body, and bring a sense of ease to the whole system.

We are often very good at filling the mind with noise — worry, doubt, self-judgement. This practice offers something different: a chance to rest the mind on words that are steady, simple, and freeing.

You will be introduced to a small number of Sanskrit mantras, along with their meanings. You are always welcome to use the English equivalent if that feels more natural.

For example:
Shanti — peace
Traditionally repeated three times:
Peace for the world
Peace for others
Peace for yourself

It is a simple practice, used for thousands of years, yet deeply powerful.

In this class you receive:
Physical release through Yin
Mental clarity through focus
Emotional and spiritual balance

This is the Cosy Studio this afternoon. It currently looks a bit like an airline's lost luggage depot or a school camp right before the buses leave! 🎒🧳

We’ve been busy giving the member storage shelves a massive spring clean. To get them sparkling, we had to move every single mat, bolster, and prop into the Cosy Studio.

Here is what you need to do:
Over the next couple of weeks, please plan to arrive just a few minutes early to your next class. Head into the Cosy Studio, embark on a quick treasure hunt to find your gear, and after your class then you can put it back on the beautifully fresh shelves! ✨

The housekeeping fine print:
We will leave the "baggage claim" set up in the Cosy Studio for a couple of weeks. After that, any unclaimed gear will be moved into lost property. If it's still hanging around after two months, we will be donating it to the Salvos so it can find a new home.

See you (and your mats!) in the studio soon... that is, if you can find them!
