Fig Counselling

Fig Counselling Holistic Therapist, Accessibly Alternative. I think holistically about wellbeing, mental health and trauma. Wellbeing is a whole mind and body experience.

I have a special interest in helping people who are navigating stress, anxiety, depression, burn-out, trauma and PTSD. A Mind-Body Trauma-aware Counsellor using Somatic Therapies to bring the body and the mind into the counselling process. If your mental health is out of balance, it’s likely your physical health is too, and vice versa. We work together to bring your mind, body and life, into harmony, restoring wellbeing and allowing you to thrive rather than just survive. With a special interest in trauma, I work with individuals navigating stress, anxiety, sleep issues, relationship issues, emotional reactivity, difficulty connecting with feelings and the body, work stress and burnout.

💭 “When anxiety attacks, it can feel like a wave crashing over you. But there are gentle, body-based tools that can help you ride the wave instead of being swept away.”

In my latest blog, I share practical somatic and mindful techniques to help manage anxiety attacks — from grounding and orienting, to breath practices, resourcing, and even using simple post-it notes with affirmations like “I am safe” and “This moment will pass.”

So often our emotions live in the body before we can name them in the mind.
By pausing and listening within, we open the door to understanding, compassion, and change.

What an incredible honour, to be asked to co-host this book launch last Saturday and interview the author.
Sherrie Laryse is one of the most incredible humans I have meet (so proud to call her my friend), generous, funny, grounded, unbelievably smart and wise.
I cannot recommend her latest book 'The Body Talks Back' more highly.
You won't be able to put it down, you will laugh and cry and it will deliver some of the greatest wisdom in the most easy to digest form.
Thank you Sherrie for being you.

Between stimulus and response sits a tiny gap. If we can expand this gap with a breath, a brief pause, a moment to ground and gather ourselves we open up the ability to choose our response.

This choice is our ultimate super power.

We get to chose, and we can chose kindness.

This does not mean that we allow others to continue to hurt us and do not create healthy boundaries. In the gap we can chose how we can respond without speaking or lashing out in a way that we may regret.

There is an enormous difference between reacting and responding. Creating this pause after the stimulus empowers us to respond rather than react.

Fun is a perspective, we are born with a complete understanding of fun.
Fun and laughter are healing to our body, spirit and mind.
How can you bring some fun into this week?

Here are a few suggestions to get you started

1. Take yourself on a date, a picnic, an art gallery, to a funny movie, to a café/restaurant and order something you have never eaten before.

2. Create something, anything without expectations of how it looks, embrace the process and the flaws - get some clay (the stuff you can bake in the oven), create something, silly, cheeky, useful, not useful, abstract, it doesn't matter, sew, draw, paint, write a short story, bake a cake or meal you have never made... just create something new to you.

3. Find the BEAT. Put some music on loud in the car and SING, boogie in the kitchen on your own, move and sing without caring what you sound or look like, just how it feels.

4. SMILE to yourself, the cat, to anyone, to a tree, just smile for no reason, see how it feels. I've heard that kids smile 400 times more than adults. Smiling is a catalyst to fun.

5. Give yourself permission to break a few of the pointless rules in life or in your head... put your Christmas lights up today just because you like them, wear odd bright socks, eat desert first

"Always find a reason to laugh it may not add years to your life, but it will surely add life to your years."

Nature heals.
Time in nature helps us feel better, think better, and deepens our understanding of ourselves and others.

Scientific studies suggest being in nature reduces anger, fear, and stress, and it increases positive emotions and allows us to broaden our perspective.

Regardless of age or culture, humans find nature pleasing.

- Perhaps this weekend is an opportunity to nurture your being with a little nature adventure.
- Maybe take a few moments to check in with how you are feeling and how that is showing up in your body.
- Then check in again after your nature fix.
- Has anything changed or shifted?

On that note I'm heading out into the forest this morning, with a four-legged companion, and flask of tea. 🌳🌞🌻

We are not defined by our titles, roles, challenges, symptoms or diagnoses.

We are unique individuals.

When we are truly seen and heard, for who we are, and have someone who is willing to navigate our darkness with us, we are able to remember our essence of light and turn towards it again.

I see you, I hear you.

This Medicine Woman Prayer expresses this so well.
