“Is Reformer Pilates Better Than Mat Pilates?” 🤔

Recent research is showing Reformer Pilates may provide greater improvements in areas like strength, flexibility, balance and physical performance for some people compared to mat Pilates alone.

But here’s the important part - it’s not about one being “better” than the other. It’s about choosing the right type of movement for your body, goals and injuries.

At Great Lakes Physio, our experienced team use clinical Pilates and reformer-based exercise to help with:

* injury rehabilitation
* back and neck pain
* postural strength
* balance and stability
* return to sport and activity
* confidence with movement

One of the advantages of the reformer is that the adjustable resistance and support can make exercises easier to tailor to the individual - whether you’re recovering from injury, building strength, or getting back into exercise.

The best exercise program is always the one designed for you.

If you’d like to see whether clinical Pilates could help, our team can guide you through an assessment and personalised plan.

Big week for Jono representing us on the national stage 👏

Jono has just returned from the Emerging Socceroos Championships, a key part of Football Australia’s talent identification pathway, where some of the country’s most promising young footballers are selected and monitored by national team staff.

He attended as the squad medical officer for Northern NSW Football, working across both the U15 and U16 teams. His role included delivering player prep and recovery programs leading into the tournament and throughout the week, as well as providing pitch-side physio support during games.

It was a busy tournament, managing everything from soft tissue injuries through to fractures and head injuries, keeping players safe and performing at their best.

A great result too, with the U16s finishing 3rd after a strong win over South Australia 💪

Awesome to see the level of care and experience Jono brings back to our athletes every day.

🚫 MYTH BUSTED 🚫
“You should rest until your pain goes away”

It sounds like the right thing to do… but in most cases it can actually slow your recovery.

✔️ The truth is- the right kind of movement helps your body heal
✔️ Staying completely still can lead to stiffness, weakness and longer recovery times
✔️ Gradual, guided exercise is often key to getting you back to feeling your best

If you’re unsure what you should (and shouldn’t) be doing, that’s where we come in 👇
Our physios can guide you with a plan tailored to your body, your injury and your goals.

April is Falls Awareness Month- a great reminder that falls can happen to anyone, but they’re not just “bad luck”. Strength, balance and confidence all play a big role, and the good news is these can be improved.

At Great Lakes Physio, we regularly help people reduce their risk of falls and stay active for longer.

Some simple ways to lower your risk:
• Keep moving – regular strength and balance exercises make a huge difference
• Clear hazards at home – think loose rugs, clutter and poor lighting
• Wear supportive footwear – avoid slippery soles or backless shoes
• Get your vision checked regularly
• Don’t ignore dizziness, weakness or changes in your balance

How we can help:
• Individualised strength and balance programs
• Falls risk assessments
• Treatment for pain or injuries affecting mobility
• Guidance to build confidence with walking and daily activities

If you or a loved one have noticed changes in balance, or just want to stay proactive, our experienced physios are here to help.

Send us a message or book in for an assessment – small steps now can make a big difference 👇🏼

On World Health Day, we’re reminding our community that physiotherapy and massage are about more than injury recovery- they’re about long-term wellbeing 💙

Regular physio can improve strength, balance, and mobility, helping you stay active and independent. Massage complements this by reducing muscle tension, promoting circulation, and aiding recovery.

We also offer programs like Pilates, GLAD™ and Active, Stronger, Better (ASB) classes, designed to improve walking, stability, and overall strength- helping prevent falls and keeping you moving confidently every day.

Prioritising movement and self-care isn’t just for now- it’s an investment in your health for the future!

NEW MOVEMENT GUIDELINES 🏃‍♀️ 💃 🧘🏼‍♀️

The Australian Government has released updated 24-hour movement guidelines for adults, outlining how much we should move, sit, and sleep for better health.

The shift? It’s no longer just about exercise – it’s about your whole day.

✔️ Move more across the day (not just workouts)
✔️ Include strength training each week
✔️ Break up long periods of sitting
✔️ Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep

It’s about balance across your 24 hours, not doing everything perfectly.

At Great Lakes Physio, we offer classes to help improve balance, keep you active and strong for as long as possible, and support you to move well despite health challenges – all with a caring, experienced team.

We help you build practical, sustainable habits that actually fit your lifestyle- enquire about our classes or book your next appointment today 👇🏼

Living with pain can make everyday tasks feel harder than they should, but there are small steps you can take each day to make a real difference.

Some tips to help manage pain and stay active:
• Move regularly – even short walks around the house or gentle stretching a few times a day can keep joints mobile and muscles active.
• Break up long periods of sitting – standing up and moving every 30–60 minutes helps reduce stiffness.
• Gentle strengthening – exercises for legs, hips, and back can improve stability, balance, and independence.
• Use support wisely – walking sticks, rails, or chairs can make movement safer and more comfortable.
• Listen to your body – there’s a difference between discomfort from exercise and pain that signals you need to stop or modify a movement.

Every body is different, and what works for one person might not work for another. That’s why a tailored approach from a physio can make a big difference. With the right guidance, you can manage pain, improve mobility, and keep enjoying the activities you love.

Our Physiotherapists Aaron, Lucy and Charlotte recently spent the day building on their Pilates training with Pilates Education Australia.

It was a great course and they’ve come away with some new ideas, variations and techniques that we’re looking forward to bringing into our sessions here at Great Lakes Physio.

Ongoing learning is a big part of what we do – it helps us keep things fresh and make sure you’re getting the most out of your rehab and training.
