Bring attention to your breath.

What do you notice?

Are you breathing through your mouth or your nose?

Where is your breath going? Do you notice your upper chest lifting? Do you notice your lower ribs rising?

If comfortable breathe in through your nose and out of your nose

Breathe in through your nose - working the diaphragm as it is designed.

Breathe out through your nose - ensuring the volume of breath is controlled.

Oxygen in (23% from the air)

Cells use 0.3% oxygen and make 6% carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide in the blood helps deliver oxygen to the cells (Bohr effect)

Carbon dioxide left in the lung after an exhale tells the breathing centre in the brain whether in:

Rest and digest (parasympathetic) = more carbon dioxide left - less volume of breath out - nose breathing

Fight or flight (sympathetic) = less carbon dioxide left - increased volume of breath out - mouth breathing

If uncomfortable to breathe through your nose donโ€™t force it - always practice baseline breathwork within comfort.

Excited to share this podcast episode where I got to wax lyrical with the amazing about breathing, movement and anxiety.

Finding my breath, just like finding my feet, has been a game changer for my clients and me. I credit Tess Graham from Breatheability for deepening my understanding of breathing and inspiring me to help others understand and improve their breathing and well-being, including helping with anxiety.
Jodi is an incredible human doing great things - I encourage you to listen to her other episodes as well. Tune in via my link in the bio๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

GET CURIOUS

I'll just leave this quote here by as a friendly reminder to get curious...

Curious about anything and everything...

Of course feet, movement and breathing invite curiosity but it doesn't have to be limited to those very cool and interesting things... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Go be curious in your world ๐ŸŒŽ

NOSE BREATHING

1. Helps you remain calm:

Nose breathing helps regulate the volume of breathe due to the size of the nasal passages. When you inhale a normal volume (around 5l per minute) and rate (around 10-12 breaths per minute) you exhale a normal volume allowing for the necessary amount of carbon dioxude (not a waste gas) to remain in the lungs after the exhale which signals the brain that all is well (parasympathetic state) - you are not overbreathing (blowing off more carbon dioxide) in response to a hairy mammoth running at you - which would signal to the brain to go into fight or flight (sympthetic state)

2. Helps you think & learn:

Nose breathing facilities a balanced breathing rate that helps maintain the required level of carbon dioxide in the lungs. This signals the brain's respiratory center that there is currently no perceived threat to the body. The brain and body shift into the parasympathetic state(rest and digest), and the capacity to think critically and absorb new information.

3. Helps your muscles:

When you nose breath, you regulate your breath, allowing carbon dioxide levels to remain normal. When haemoglobin delivers oxygen around the body it requires carbon dioxide to be in the blood to allow the oxygen to seperate and enter the muscle cells from the blood stream - this is called the Bohr effect (not boring at all!). Carbon dioxide is like the bus conductor letting oxygen off at its stop.

4. Helps you sleep*:

*and keep your partner happy!
Nose breathing's influence on breathing rhythm, nervous system activation, nitric oxide release, brain-wave synchronization, and sleep continuity (not snoring!) collectively contribute to enhancing sleep architecture.

5. Helps your gut health:

Nose breathing helps to regulate carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the body. CO2 is a buffer that helps maintain the right pH level for the body. CO2 is a vasodilator ensuring blood flow to the gut. CO2 retained in the lungs signal rest and digest (parasypathetic state).
