Acute pain

Acute pain is short-term pain that comes on suddenly and is usually caused by an injury, surgery, or illness. It’s your body’s natural response to harm — like an alarm system alerting you something’s wrong.

⏱️ Key Features:
• Lasts a few seconds to a few weeks or months
• Usually goes away once the cause is treated or healed
• Often sharp, intense, or throbbing
• Easy to pinpoint the cause (like a cut, sprain, or infection)

📍Examples:
• Sprained ankle
• Broken bone
• Surgery recovery
• Dental work
• Burns or cuts

✅ Why it matters:

Acute pain is protective — it stops you from doing more damage and encourages rest and healing. But if untreated, it can sometimes turn into chronic pain.

Neural pain (also called neuropathic pain) is pain caused by damage, irritation, or dysfunction in the nervous system — either the nerves themselves, the spinal cord, or the brain.

Unlike somatic pain (which comes from muscles, skin, or bones), neural pain isn’t caused by tissue damage — it’s caused by a glitch in the way the nervous system sends pain signals.

Common features of neural pain:
• 🔥 Burning or shooting pain
• ⚡ Electric shock-like sensations
• 🧊 Tingling, numbness, or pins and needles
• 📍Often feels like pain is spreading or radiating

Examples:
• Sciatica (nerve pain down the leg)
• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Shingles
• Phantom limb pain
• Diabetic neuropathy

Key Point:

Neural pain isn’t always triggered by movement or pressure. It can come on spontaneously — even gentle touch or temperature changes can set it off.

Visceral pain comes from your internal organs (like your stomach, uterus, or bladder), but the tricky part? It doesn’t always feel like it’s coming from inside.

😖 How it shows up as body pain:

Visceral pain often refers to other areas — meaning your brain gets the pain signal, but mixes up where it’s coming from. So instead of feeling it deep inside, you might feel:

• Lower back pain (from period cramps or kidney problems)

• Shoulder or neck pain (from a gallbladder issue)

• Groin or thigh pain (from bladder or pelvic organs)

• Chest or arm pain (from the heart — e.g. heart attack)

This is called referred pain, and it’s why visceral pain can be misleading.

🧠 Ever had pain you can point to? That’s somatic pain — and it comes in two flavours:

👉 Superficial somatic pain – sharp, stinging, and right at the surface (like a paper cut or burn)

💥 Deep somatic pain – dull, achy, and comes from muscles, joints, or bones (think sprains, broken bones, or muscle soreness)

If it hurts here (and you can tap the spot), somatic pain is usually to blame.

Understanding the type of pain = understanding what your body needs to heal. 💆‍♀️

The biopsychosocial model of pain is a modern way of understanding pain that looks beyond just the body. It recognises that pain is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors — not just what’s happening in your tissues.

🧬 Biological (Bio)
• Injury, inflammation, or illness
• Nerve sensitivity
• Genetics

The physical side of pain — but only one piece of the puzzle

🧠 Psychological (Psycho)
• Emotions like fear, anxiety, or depression
• Thoughts and beliefs about pain
• Coping skills

How your mind interprets and reacts to pain

🤝 Social
• Work and family support
• Stress levels
• Cultural or societal beliefs about pain

How your environment and relationships impact your pain experience

🧩 Why it matters:

Pain isn’t just about tissue damage. You can have pain without injury, or injury without pain. The biopsychosocial model helps explain this and encourages holistic treatment — addressing your body, mind, and environment.
