Janel Gibson - Arts Therapist

Janel Gibson - Arts Therapist Janel Gibson is an Arts Therapist (AThR) and Peer Worker.
(1)

Creative Arts Therapy offers a way to multi-modally explore and communicate your thoughts, feelings, emotions and experiences, using all arts forms, such as painting, clay, movement or sound/music. In Creative Arts Therapy, we focus on the process of arts making rather than just creating a piece of art. No artistic skills or ability are required to participate in creative arts therapy. Arts therapist, Janel Gibson, works from the principles of Intentional Peer Support and the MIECAT form of Inquiry. These include valuing lived experience and considering individuals as experts of their own lives. Instead of telling you what you should do in each situation, Janel will walk alongside you to come to a place of meaning and making sense of something that holds value or significance for you. Arts therapies can help people to resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviour, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and achieve insight. Using the arts to explore the unknown allows for space and distance from topics that feel
emotionally charged and thus provides an invitation to ‘stay with’ discomfort in a safe way.

As everyone has their own ways of being and doing, the Arts Therapist will work together with the client to create a safe space to attend to what arises. Services:
- Individual Sessions
- Group Program
- Wellbeing Sessions for businesses/community groups

This Might Finally Make Sense.
Your reactions — emotional shutdown, irritability, tension, avoidance — aren’t personal flaws.
They’re nervous system responses that once kept you safe.

In trauma‑informed care, we support the body’s safety first - not just talk.
Creative expression, nervous system regulation, and slow pacing come before insights.

Teen girls today are carrying a lot -
friendship pressure, anxiety, self-doubt, and the quiet fear of not fitting in.

When words feel hard to find, creative expression can offer a safe way to release emotions without needing to explain or justify them.

Arts therapy supports teenage girls to:
• explore identity safely
• build emotional language
• strengthen self-trust
• feel seen, not “fixed”

This is a calm, non-judgemental space in Frankston (and ONline), where therapy moves at her pace.

If this resonates for your teen, our mental health trained therapist is ready to walk alongside you and your young person.

No Waitlist. No art experience required. No Referral Needed.

🫶 I'm out of the studio this week, to support young people on a camp. I prioritise volunteering each year because I see value in community care.

I love seeing people support others through their philanthropic work. Whilst I can't discount every session I offer, I try to put my values in actions by scheduling volunteering opportunities like this.

I don't always share about the unpaid work I do because my intention isn't to boast about myself. But I do believe it's important to celebrate the great things happening in the community like this camp where all 'staff' pay their way to be there (you heard me, they don't get paid). They attend unpaid training, and give up their holiday hours, so that high school kids can participate and feel safe enough in the process.

I am a therapist with boundaries, but I'm also a human who cares deeply about the community.

You can still contact me via email and website - enquiries might just be a little slower moving until I return to office on Tue 26th Jan.

Grounding can look different for everyone.
For some grounding is colouring, tearing paper or gentle movement to calm their nervous system, without needing to talk.

So much happens in Art Therapy,
Beyond just creating art work.

I use evidence based approaches to support people to feel calm, to understand their patterns, and to find safe options that help them feel confident.

It's not an art class. Here something meaningful happens.
