History of the Brahma Kumaris Australia
In 1974, BK Jagdish Chander, then the Chief Spokesperson for the Brahma Kumaris from India, visited Australia while on a tour of South East Asia. Through his connections in the Hatha Yoga teachers network he was able to visit Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. On his return to India he informed the leadership team of the BKs that Australia is an open and welcoming country and centres could be established easily.
Brahma Kumaris Australia was established originally in Canberra by John Kane from London in late 1974. John soon after moved to Sydney, in Ashfield and established what became a very busy centre. He asked for assistance from Dadi Janki to send experienced teachers here. First sister Suman arrived and due to growing interest Dr Nirmala came. However due to demands from other parts of the BKs internationally they had to return to India and London.
The reins of the centre in Sydney was given to a young traveller came across this spiritual wisdom in London and brought it back to his homeland. A few years later, Dr Nirmala Kajaria from the Brahma Kumaris in India was asked to base herself in Sydney as the BK senior teacher, while the young traveller moved to South America to open a BK Centre. Meanwhile a second BK student returned home from London to establish a centre in Collingwood, Melbourne.
