7pm TONIGHT: Our presenter for Practical Meditation this Monday is Lyn Elliott who will discuss the topic "Removing Inner Clutter": When you are clearing out the clutter from your house, you look at all the things you have collected from the past and see whether they are useful at this present moment. When we are talking about the clutter of the mind, there is a huge amount of stuff that has to be dealt with from the past and then there are decisions you have to make in the present and possibly some anxiety for the future. You are trying to sort through several different layers at once. In this session we will see how we can simplify this process in a few easy steps.
Session starts: 7.00pm Monday 6th December 2021

In 1974, BK Jagdish Chander, then the Chief Spokesperson for the Brahma Kumaris from India, visited Australia while on a tour of South East Asia. Through his connections in the Hatha Yoga teachers network he was able to visit Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. On his return to India he informed the leadership team of the BKs that Australia is an open and welcoming country and centres could be established easily.
Brahma Kumaris Australia was established originally in Canberra by John Kane from London in late 1974. John soon after moved to Sydney, in Ashfield and established what became a very busy centre. He asked for assistance from Dadi Janki to send experienced teachers here. First sister Suman arrived and due to growing interest Dr Nirmala came. However due to demands from other parts of the BKs internationally they had to return to India and London.
The reins of the centre in Sydney was given to a young traveller came across this spiritual wisdom in London and brought it back to his homeland. A few years later, Dr Nirmala Kajaria from the Brahma Kumaris in India was asked to base herself in Sydney as the BK senior teacher, while the young traveller moved to South America to open a BK Centre. Meanwhile a second BK student returned home from London to establish a centre in Collingwood, Melbourne.
Since these early days, the Brahma Kumaris have shown a solid commitment to having representation in major cities across Australia. Brahma Kumaris Australia has centres in every state, as well as three spiritual retreat venues. Our National Coordinating Office is based at Five Dock in Sydney’s inner west.
More than 100 meditation teachers and volunteers take care of all programmes, administration, publicity, catering and maintenance at each of the Brahma Kumaris’ centres across Australia. This dedicated team works tirelessly for the benefit of their neighbourhood and strive to be samples of how to lead a balanced life using meditation as the foundation. These volunteers are regular students who are committed to supporting these venues. Many of them also have paid jobs and contribute financially to the ongoing maintenance of these places as another expression of their service to the community.
Sanctuaries of Peace
Brahma Kumaris Australia events are offered in our centres, retreat centres and class locations. Sometimes community rooms, libraries and other public places are used to reach local communities. Some have been able to provide this service in their own homes, some in community rooms. This trend has expanded the geographical opportunities available to would-be meditators in various city suburbs. The teachers in class locations are experienced long-term BK meditation practitioners and regular students and offer the same standard of events as those offered at our centres.
