How should parents respond when their child is in pain?
A comforting hug? Encouraging bravery? Something in between?

A new article written by our colleague Joshua Pate for The Conversation breaks down what science tells us about how parents shape children’s pain responses — not just in the moment, but for years to come.

This is an issue we see all the time in our Kids Leg Pain Research, where children’s emotional responses often influence how they experience — and recover from — leg pain.

Children with growing pains and restless legs syndrome often experience discomfort that impacts sleep and quality of life. But how are these conditions assessed and diagnosed?

Our new study, led by PhD Candidate Mitch Smith, reviewed 19,806 records and found:
🔹 Assessments rely heavily on subjective pain reports
🔹 No consistent diagnostic criteria across studies
🔹 Outcome measures rarely applied

This research lays the foundation for future clinical recommendations to improve care for children.

Exciting research update!
Our amazing PhD student Rachal Quinlan and Prof Cylie Williams have just presented our Delphi findings from the Kids Leg Pain project, helping to improve how we measure pain, fatigue, function, and quality of life in children with hypermobility.

We also had the chance to visit the SickKids Hospital Ehlers-Danlos Clinic in Toronto to share our work and connect with their brilliant team. It’s so encouraging to see international collaboration growing in this space!
