Maureen has been volunteering this year for a whopping 17 years. Eleven years ago, she invited her husband Brian to join her.
Maureen says she loves volunteering with her husband, he is wonderful company and support. They both bring their own unique skills and life experiences but with a common goal of making a positive difference to another person’s day.
“I’ve been here a long time. It’s just lovely having conversation, human connection and giving a helping hand. There is a generation growing up that are lonely and isolated in our community and volunteering is a wonderful way to stay connected. I love people and being available to help, I find it very rewarding,” says Maureen. And Brian agrees.
Thank you to our dynamic and favourite duo, Maureen and Brian and all those who volunteer with our St John of God South East Melbourne Hospitals. We are grateful and very proud of all you give. 🩵

We're looking for a volunteer patient visitor.
We are looking for a volunteer to be part of our patient visiting program to provide company and conversation to patients during their hospital stay. Our volunteers offer a social chat about hobbies and interests and provide an opportunity to reminisce through caring and respectful companionship.

R U OK? Whatever your age or stage of life, there's always time to check in with someone to really ask how they are going. It's also important to be honest with the people who ask you. If you're not feeling as good as you can be, speak to your GP, there are many ways to get you feeling well again.

It's Malnutrition week!
Did you know?🙂
A recent audit at SJOG Frankston found 23% of in-patients were either malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.
The Australasian Nutrition Care Day Survey, spanning 56 hospitals across Australia and New Zealand, found 1 in 3 patients were malnourished, with two-thirds not consuming all of the hospital food offered.
In older adults, malnutrition leads to longer hospital stays, higher infection risk, impaired wound healing, muscle wasting, poor rehab outcomes and increased mortality.
What we do at SJOG Frankston to support our patients:
Within 24 hours of admission to rehab, patients are screened using the Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST). A score of 2 or higher indicates the patient is at risk and a referral to dietetics is indicated.
We screen rehab patients weekly during their admission using the MST.
We weigh our rehab patients weekly during their admission. When a patient is acutely unwell, weight and nutrition can decline rapidly, so monitoring is just as important as screening.
Nurses are our second pair of eyes - your documentation of intake, supplements, and weight changes provide vital evidence for Dietitians to act quickly (thank you!!)
If you have any questions about nutrition, meals or malnutrition, please speak with our team.
